FIU Panthers 2023 Future Odds

Panthers Shaping Up as Longshot of Longshots in 2023-24

The deck is stacked against the Florida International Panthers in 2023, as it is in most seasons. The Panthers are expected to be among the worst teams in the country, with a projected win total of just 3.0.

There have been some signs of promise under head coach Mike MacIntyre, but the Panthers still have a ways to go before anyone can take them seriously. Read on as we break down the FIU Panthers future odds in our team preview.

Still a Ways to Go in Rebuild for FIU

The Florida International Panthers took a slight step forward in head coach Mike MacIntyre’s first season but still finished only 4-8, including 2-6 in Conference USA play. They had one of the worst defenses in the country, ranking 127th in FBS in points allowed (37.2 per game). And their offense wasn’t much better. They finished the season with four straight losses, culminating in a 33-28 defeat to Middle Tennessee, per NCAAF scores.

This season, FIU isn’t expected to be any better. In fact, it might even be a bit worse. After all, it’s projected for only 3.0 wins. But by now, the Panthers are used to low expectations.

Since transitioning to FBS competition in 2004, the Panthers have finished with a losing record 15 times in 19 tries. They’ve posted zero wins twice and one wins three times. Amidst that they’ve made five bowl games, going 2-3. Their last appearance came in the 2019 Camellia Bowl, in which they lost 34-26 to Arkansas State.

Unfortunately, MacIntyre’s rebuilding job got more difficult this offseason when running back Lexington Joseph tore his ACL. On top of that, linebacker Shaun Peterson (UCF) and offensive linemen Lyndell Hudson Jr. (Florida) and Shamar Hobdy-Lee (Houston) all transferred. Those departures will put even more pressure on junior quarterback Grayson James to produce. James flashed potential last season, passing for 1,962 yards and 11 touchdowns to garner all-conference honorable mention. But he must cut down on the turnovers (11 interceptions) to take the next step in his development.

National Championship Odds: Not Even a Prayer

The +100000 FIU Panthers future odds match the longest in the country. Need we say more? At that point, the Panthers might as well not even be on the board. Seriously, there’s no chance of them winning it all. None.

Even if FIU was to go undefeated — it won’t — its college football schedule isn’t good enough to even sniff a major bowl game. That’s just the reality. Don’t bother trying to cash in here.

Conference Odds: Longshot at Best

Two-time defending champion UTSA was one of six schools to leave C-USA, along with North Texas, UAB, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, and Rice. To help replace them, C-USA added former FBS independents Liberty and New Mexico State and FCS contenders Jacksonville State and Sam Houston.

Because of FBS transition rules, both Jacksonville State and Sam Houston are ineligible to compete for the C-USA title in 2023-24. Yet even with the candidates whittled down — there are seven eligible schools, led by Western Kentucky at +130 — FIU is still a longshot at best. In fact, at +5000, the Panthers easily have the longest odds on the board.

Four schools are priced 8/1 or better, followed by UTEP (+1000) and New Mexico State (+2000). And then there’s FIU. Sure, surprises happen, but this isn’t one worth wagering on.

Regular Season Wins: Low Bar to Clear

The Panthers have one of the lowest projected win totals (3.0) in the country. The odds of them clearing has climbed from -135 to -160, while the Under has been juiced to +130.

FIU won four games last season, its most since 2019 (6-7). Can it get there again? The schedule is weak, but that may not matter. FIU is just not any good. According to college football point spreads, it’s a 10.5-point underdog and +310 on the moneyline for its Aug. 26 opener at C-USA counterpart Louisiana Tech. The Panthers then get the FCS program in Maine the following week at home. Outside of possibly that, is there another game on the schedule in which FIU will be favored? Probably not. Things are that bleak.

Again, the bar here is low. Really low. The Panthers may need to pull off an upset or two to clear it.

To Make Playoffs: If We’re Being Serious…

FIU in the College Football Playoff? That can’t happen. Won’t happen. Why even bother discussing it? The Panthers will be fortunate to get four to five wins, let alone qualify for the CFP.

No team from C-USA has ever made the CFP, and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon. It’s why there currently aren’t any FIU Panthers future odds available in this market.
