How Will Sooners React After Loss?

Oklahoma comes into this game after suffering their first loss of the season last week to Kansas. Were the Sooners looking ahead to this game or were they just outplayed by a decent Kansas team? A little of both, perhaps. But whatever the reason, Oklahoma’s road to the college football playoffs just got a little bit harder. Still, the Sooners are 7-1 straight-up and 6-2 against the spread. In over under betting, Oklahoma is 5-3 in totals.

The Sooners are piling up the points offensively. Oklahoma averages 41.9 points per game against teams that allow 25.7. The Sooners are rushing for 181.9 yards per game and throwing for 308.9. Oklahoma is No. 6 in the nation in total offense. The Sooners are a better passing team than a running team, averaging 4.3 yards per rush and 9.3 yards per pass. Oklahoma is No. 6 in pass percentage, completing more than 72% of its passes.

The Sooners can also play defense. Oklahoma allows 18.9 points per game to teams allowing 29.8 points. The stop unit defends the run well and is pretty solid against the pass. Oklahoma doesn’t have any real weakness on the defensive side of things.

Oklahoma State Playing Good Football

The Cowboys enter this one on a four-game winning streak, both straight-up and against the college football betting odds. Oklahoma State did beat both Kansas and Kansas State during the winning streak. So there have been a couple of impressive victories lately. The Cowboys started out 2-2, including an inexplicable 33-7 loss to South Alabama, but have gotten themselves bowl eligible.

Oklahoma State is averaging 31.1 points per game and does a lot of damage on the ground. The Cowboys rush for 185.4 yards per game. Oklahoma State is 5-0 when rushing for 150 or more yards and 1-2 when it doesn’t. The Cowboys pass more than they run, although the rushing attack is a little more consistent. Oklahoma State gains 5.7 yards per rush and 6.3 yards per pass, so not a huge difference.

Oklahoma State’s defense is a little better than average. But that’s about the best you can say about it. The Cowboys are allowing 24.4 points per game to teams that score 27.4 points. Oklahoma State is allowing 4.5 yards per rush and 7.9 yards per pass. But the Cowboys have done a decent job limiting the damage on the ground. Oklahoma State has allowed more than 200 rushing yards on four occasions. But the Cowboys have won and covered three of the four games.

What to Expect

The Sooners are likely to throw a bit more than they did against Kansas. Oklahoma went heavy on its running game and it cost them in the end. The Sooners have a solid quarterback in Dillon Gabriel, so throwing just 19 passes against the Jayhawks was a surprise. Don’t be surprised to see the Sooners throw more than 30 times here.

Oklahoma State will still be looking for wins to improve their landing spot on the NCAA football bowls schedule. A couple of more victories could see the Cowboys land in a pretty decent game. The remaining schedule looks to be good for the Cowboys. Oklahoma State will want to run the ball and could have a bit of success against Oklahoma. The Sooners did allow 225 yards on the ground to Kansas. It makes for the Cowboys to try the same thing.

Who to Bet On?

The Oklahoma Sooners vs Oklahoma State bets are going into a pretty tough point spread of Sooners -6. Oklahoma was favored by 7 at Kansas a week ago. Oklahoma is 5-2 ATS as a favorite this year. But the Cowboys are 3-1 as an underdog, so both teams are in favorable situations.

The Oklahoma Sooners vs Oklahoma State bets on the total might lean to the under. This is the highest total the Cowboys have seen all season. If Oklahoma’s defense comes into play, getting the over might be a tough chore.

But the best play in this one is Oklahoma -6. The Sooners were guilty of looking ahead a bit and paid the price. They’ll make amends with the victory in this game.
