Giants vs Eagles Game Preview: Philadelphia Huge Favorites

Eagles Favored By Nearly 2 Touchdowns

The New York Giants will try to play the role of spoiler on Christmas, when they visit the Philadelphia Eagles. The two NFC East rivals don’t particularly care for each other, which should heighten the intensity. In a role reversal, it’s New York, which enters this NFL game having won three of its last four, while the Eagles have dropped three straight. The Giants vs Eagles game preview sees Philadelphia favored by 13.5 points, and the total on the game is 43.

Giants Revert Back to Old Ways

After scoring 20.5 points per game in Tommy DeVito’s first four starts, New York scored just six points against New Orleans. It wasn’t all DeVito’s fault. Receivers dropped three passes in the first half alone. He was also sacked seven times. But things won’t be much easier against a Philadelphia team that has won 16 of the last 19 games between the two.

For the NFL season, the Giants are still one of the worst offensive teams in the league. New York averages just 261.7 total yards per game. The rushing attack hasn’t been horrible.

The Giants are averaging 111 yards per game and 4.1 yards per carry against NFL teams, allowing 4.3 yards per carry. It’s the passing game that has been bad, averaging 150.7 yards per game and just 5.1 yards per pass attempt.

New York’s defense hasn’t been that bad, considering how little help from the offense they’ve gotten. The Giants are allowing 24.1 points per game to teams who score an average of 22.9 points. The New York defense has been a little worse than average, but they have played well enough to win another game or two.

The Giants are just 5-8-1 against the NFL scores and odds this season and 2-6 ATS away from home. New York is 4-10 in totals in large part due to its offense, which is averaging 13.5 points per game.

Eagles Need to Get Untracked

Philadelphia’s recent losing streak has created a mess in the NFC East playoff picture. The Eagles looked to be running away with the division title but now find themselves tied with Dallas at 10-4 entering this week.

Philadelphia is still one of the favorites in the NFC and its Super Bowl odds are lower than the Cowboys, primarily based on playing the Giants twice in the next three weeks, along with Arizona. Dallas has Miami, Detroit and Washington on the schedule.

Offensively, the Eagles are averaging 25.6 points against teams, allowing 21.4 points per game. Philadelphia runs the ball pretty well, gaining 4.2 yards per carry and 128.3 yards per game against teams allowing 4.1 yards per rush. The passing game is effective, gaining 6.9 yards per pass attempt against teams, allowing 6.4 yards.

The Eagles have been a little disappointing on defense, allowing 24.4 points to teams scoring 23.4 points. Philadelphia has been pretty average against the run and the pass. The defense is going to have to pick it up if the Eagles want to make another deep run in the playoffs.

What to Expect

The Giants should come out throwing the ball. They’ll be taking a good look at DeVito over the next three games to determine their plans for the 2024 NFL Draft. While New York hasn’t officially been eliminated from the playoffs, by the time the week is over, it should be. Looking to the future is in the team’s best interest.

The Eagles will come out looking to make a statement. Philadelphia needs to show the rest of the league its losing streak is nothing to be worried about. The losses to San Francisco and Dallas are understandable. Last week’s loss to Seattle is a little more difficult to take. Expect the Eagles to let Jalen Hurts do his thing and throw frequently, while running more as the game goes on.

Who to Bet On?

The Giants vs Eagles game preview notes Philadelphia is in a tough historical situation. Double-digit favorites on a three-game losing streak are just 5-14-1 against the spread dating all the back to 1992. The Eagles are just the second team to be favored by more than 13 points while on a three-game losing streak in the last 40 years. The first, the 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers, lost outright to the Raiders as 14.5-point favorites.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see the Eagles take out their frustrations on the Giants, but New York has probably been looking forward to this game, as well. It was the Eagles who ended the Giants’ season last year in ugly fashion, with a 38-7 victory.

The Giants vs Eagles game preview will instead look at the total and take the over 43. Philadelphia is 5-1 in totals at home this year, while the Giants are 3-5 on the road compared to 1-5 at home. If the Eagles play their game, the Giants won’t need to score much to push this game over the number.
