The New York Giants are using their third quarterback of the NFL season. That third quarterback also helped the Giants earn their third win of the year.

His name is Tommy DeVito. He’s a former undrafted free agent out of Syracuse & Illinois who is from New Jersey. He still lives with his parents and gets his bed made daily.

He can come home and get his mom’s chicken cutlets when he finishes football practice or a game.

Never in a million years did DeVito think he’d be starting for the Giants this season. He was behind Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor and didn’t even get drafted in the three days.

But he was prepared when his name was called.

He’s thrown the ball 80 times and has completed 61.3% of his passes. He’s also had 16 carries for 77 yards this season.

But his resiliency shines the most. DeVito has been sacked 22 times, including nine times against the Commanders last weekend in a 31-19 win.

Despite being sacked nine times, he finished with three passing touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 69.2% completion percentage. It was indeed his best game as a Giant.

It will be hard to replicate these numbers as he continues to get sacked at a ridiculous rate. His health is the primary concern. Jones and Taylor are on the NFL injured list due to the offensive line.

However, for DeVito, this is truly nothing new. In college at Syracuse & Illinois, the sacks would pile up there too. He’s used to it by now.

DeVito’s Time In Syracuse

Tommy DeVito had the luxury of playing as a freshman for Syracuse in 2018. He appeared in seven games and completed 50.6% of passes for 525 yards.

In 2019, he took over the role as the starter and finished the season with 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He completed 213 passes and had his best season as a sophomore.

DeVito saw only four games in his junior year due to an injury. He didn’t lose any eligibility because of that injury. So in 2021, he stayed as a junior but saw only three games, with Garrett Shrader starting to come on strong for the Orange.

Therefore, he finished his college career at Illinois, where he started 13 NFL games and finished with a career-best 141.2 quarterback rating. DeVito threw for 15 touchdowns and only four interceptions while throwing for 2,650 yards. It was his best season as a college quarterback.

Although Syracuse gave up on him, Illinois saw his promise.

Player of the Week: Tommy Devito

DeVito was named the starting quarterback for the Giants in early November once Daniel Jones was done for the year.

Critics thought that the Giants should look into other veteran options. But the Giants stuck with DeVito, insisting he was the best choice.

That was probably true at the time. Other quarterbacks have to come in and learn a whole new system. Meanwhile, DeVito knew the playbook, allowing the Giants offensive staff to stay deep into their playbook.

The Giants only scored six points against the Raiders in DeVito’s debut. However, DeVito succeeded more against the Cowboys in a 39-17 loss. He still threw two touchdowns despite throwing for only 86 yards.

Finally, the confidence came through. He added 246 yards passing with three touchdowns against the Commanders. It was an incredible week for the New Jersey native. The sacks have to stop for the Giants. New York will need to protect DeVito better. But a game like this will only help DeVito’s confidence.

DeVito had an up-and-down college career. But he began his college career well and finished it well. That was enough to land a roster spot with the Giants.

Can DeVito Win Rookie Of The Year?

The short answer is no.

DeVito won’t be the Offensive Rookie of the Year. He’s not even a top quarterback for NFL leaders and rookies. He’s only going to play half the season and hasn’t thrown for more than 250 yards in a game yet.

Meanwhile, quarterbacks like C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young began the season at quarterback and have put up some incredible numbers. The Texans’ quarterback is easily the favorite and could win the MVP if the Texans continue to stack up wins.

Stroud is sitting at -4000 in the MVP NFL betting odds, while Jahmyr Gibbs is second on the list at +2000. Puka Nacua of the Rams is third at +2000, with Bijan Robinson at +3000.

Most sportsbooks don’t even have DeVito listed with odds. At least he gets to enjoy some success in the NFL. The journey of an NFL quarterback isn’t easy. But DeVito will have his performance against the Commanders forever. That’s really exciting.
