TNF: San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks Betting Preview & Odds

Red-Hot 49ers Look to Clinch NFC West

The San Francisco 49ers can clinch a division title with a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night as they look for their seventh-consecutive victory. The 49ers are now led by rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, who was taken with the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but have shown no signs of offensive regression whatsoever. He was great in San Francisco’s 35-7 drubbing of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is a major focus of this 49ers vs Seahawks betting odds.

The Seahawks’ scuffles continued over the weekend as they lost to the lowly Carolina Panthers, 30-24. That’s now three losses in four games for Seattle, which held Sam Darnold to just 120 passing yards but gave up 223 rushing yards. Geno Smith also threw two brutal interceptions. Smith has still been a revelation for Seattle this NFL season but has thrown a pick in three straight games so he might be starting to regress a bit.

Unsurprisingly, San Francisco opened as a one-point road favorite on Sunday night and now is up to a 3.5-point favorite with Vegas and the betting public realizing that the 49ers should have a significant cushion over the struggling Seahawks.

The 49ers were originally -120 favorites on the moneyline but are now a resounding -185. If you’re looking for TNF parlay picks, consider going with the over. The over/under began at 41.5 points and quickly rose up to 43.5 points. Considering how many points the 49ers have been scoring recently (and how bad the Seahawks’ defense is), that number still looks too low.

49ers Have Enough Weapons to Support Purdy

Even though San Francisco is essentially down to its third-string quarterback in Purdy, the 49ers haven’t skipped a beat offensively. They’ve scored 33+ points in three of their last four NFL matchups and, with Purdy under center against the Dolphins and Seahawks, San Francisco has outscored its opposition 68-24. Of course, it hasn’t all been because of Purdy but the rookie has done a great job of limiting his mistakes, making accurate passes and letting the 49ers’ strong playmakers do their thing.

Between Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle, San Francisco is loaded on the offensive end of the ball and just needs a game-manager-type quarterback to make it all work — much like Jimmy Garoppolo was able to do.

With the Seahawks having the third-worst scoring defense and fifth-worst yardage defense, the 49ers vs Seahawks betting odds are understandably one-sided in the direction of San Francisco. It’s just going to be really difficult for Seattle to limit San Francisco’s well-rounded, top-ten offense if Purdy can do the bare minimum.

San Francisco’s Defense is Tough to Crack

It feels unfair that San Francisco has an elite defense to go along with such an explosive offense. The 49ers’ defense might even be the best in football as it currently sits in the top spot in both points allowed and yards allowed.

It’s really that side of the ball which has allowed San Francisco to rocket up the NFL standings even as the 49ers have dealt with injuries left and right. San Francisco forces a lot of turnovers (5th-most), completely shuts down the run (1st in yards allowed per carry) and is great at stopping the opposition from moving the chains (1st in opposing team 1st downs).

It all starts up front with Nick Bosa (14.5 sacks) and Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner, who might make up the most formidable linebacking tandem in the NFL. The incredible amount of pressure that the San Francisco front-seven generates makes the job easier for the 49ers’ secondary, led by the Ward’s (Charvarius and Jimmie) and Talanoa Hufanga — who has had a huge breakout season and leads San Francisco with four interceptions.

Seattle Might be Crashing Back to Earth

When you look at the 49ers’ and Seahawks’ respective records, you might think that the 49ers vs Seahawks betting odds should be much closer than they are. But, when you dive deeper into both NFL teams — and consider that San Francisco’s Purdy and Samuel seem to have avoided major injuries and should play on Thursday — it’s clear that Kyle Shanahan’s team is in a different tier entirely.

Seattle has been a huge surprise story, in large part due to Geno Smith’s stellar play, but the Seahawks are finally starting to look more like the so-so team they were expected to be when the season started.

The NFL injury report starts with the running back Kenneth Walker III, which hasn’t helped either as Seattle’s solid running game (8th in yards per carry) has failed to garner over 90 yards in each of the Seahawks’ last four games. Without an effective ground game, there has been more pressure on Geno to make plays which has led to some of his bad decisions.

The 49ers are great at exploiting their opponent’s weaknesses and should be able to continue doing the same against Seattle, on both offense and defense.
