2023 NFL Hot Seat Rankings: Not So Jolly Christmas
With Four Weeks Reaming of the Regular Season, This Coaches Might Be Getting a Change of Scenery

No Room for Error 😳
What gets you into the holiday spirit more than talking about people getting fired? The latest NFL news, as revealed by the 2023 NFL Hot Seat Rankings, shows several head coaches could soon be joining Brandon Staley in updating their LinkedIn profile.
These coaches have four NFL games remaining to prove they deserve another season. Time will tell if Santa gives these coaches one more year to prove their worth.
Let’s examine five coaches who are being mentioned on the hot seat list. In the spirit of your favorite Christmas gift exchanges, we’ll categorize these into rumors we’re passing on, and which ones are worth keeping.
One lump of coal means your job is safer than Kyle Shanahan, and five lumps of coal indicate this coach should put the house on the market. Dear reader, just know I would only put the finest gifts in your stocking like winning a 5-leg parlay.
Here’s a look at five coaches being mentioned in NFL rumors.
No. 1 Bill Belichick, Patriots: 5 Lumps of Coal
All good things come to an end, and NBC Sports’ Tom Curran reports the decision has already been made. Robert Kraft decided after the Pats’ loss in Germany that a new coach is coming this offseason.
I’m not convinced that Belichick has suddenly become a bad coach. I am also skeptical of Belichick serving as a general manager anymore. However, considering the 2023 NFL Hot Seat Rankings, his next team would be wise to pair him with an experienced general manager.
REPORT:
Per: @DMRussini On Bill Belichick leaving the Patriots.
“Most believe at the end of the season there will be a mutual parting of ways”
So now Curran, Howe and Russini all believe Bill Belichick will leave the Patriots based on their sources.

No. 2 Antonio Pierce, Raiders: 3 Lumps of Coal
Based on The Athletic’s Dianna Russini’s report, it sounds like Antonio Pierce has a chance to be the permanent Raiders head coach. It also looks like Pierce is very much coaching for his job.

“Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, Antonio Pierce is doing everything he possibly can to permanently get the head coaching job,” Russini wrote on December 16. “His interim experience has won over the Raiders locker room, and with three games left, he gets one final push to show he’s the right person for the job.”
Pierce’s future could depend on if the Raiders can land a big fish like Jim Harbaugh this offseason.
No. 3 Ron Rivera: 5 Lumps of Coal
Russini also reports that new Commanders owner Josh Harris has decided to move on from Ron Rivera. It looks like nothing will happen until after the season, but Washington is likely already forming a short list of candidates to be the team’s new coach in 2024.
Who could be the next coach fired after Brandon Staley?
As things stand, two are set to depart at season’s end in Washington and New England.

“There are no surprises arriving in Washington at the end of the regular season,” Russini detailed. “At this point, it’s understood around the building based on multiple people I have spoken with that Ron Rivera and some front office members will be fired.
“Since acquiring the team, new owner Josh Harris has had the vision to keep Rivera in place through the end of the season, then move on. It’s not a secret anymore.”
No. 4 Pete Carroll: 1 Lump of Coal
Pete Carroll seems as frustrated as he’s ever been in Seattle. For the first time under his watch, the Seahawks have lost four straight games, a number that could keep growing.

Let’s remember the Seahawks chose Carroll and John Schneider over Russell Wilson. The only way Carroll is not the coach next season is if he abruptly retires.
“Always compete” Carroll is not going to want to go out like this though, so smart money is on the Seahawks running things back in 2024. NFL standings show the Seahawks are still in contention to make the NFL playoffs, but that’s only happening if Seattle can start winning.
No. 5 Brian Daboll: 2 Lumps of Coal
Has the story of Tommy Devito distracted us from Brian Daboll’s job security? CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported in November that Daboll’s job is safe.
I’ll trust Jones on this one, but it is worth watching to see if how the team ends the season could impact Daboll’s future. This team isn’t going anywhere, but Devito has at least rescued what would have been a bitter season.
