FC Dynamo Kyiv Stats & History
Dynamo Kyiv stems from the Soviet Dynamo sports society. Originally based out of Kharkiv, the capital was moved to Kyiv in 1934. Dynamo played in the first season of the Soviet Championship in 1936. Their best finishes, before WWII interrupted the league, were second place in 1936 and third in 1937.
In 1942, eight Dynamo Kyiv players were part of the Russian soccer amateur team “Start”, which gained fame for winning matches against German army teams. After defeating the “Rukh” team 8-0, some of the players were captured and tortured and sent to labor camps by the Gestapo. The match is now referred to as the “Death Match”.
After the war, Dynamo Kyiv began playing in the Soviet Top League once again and found considerable success. In the Soviet soccer era, they were often the only Ukrainian team that could compete with the top Russian teams. The first Soviet Top League win in the FC Dynamo Kyiv stats was in 1961, but they had won the Soviet Cup seven years prior. Dynamo went on to win an impressive 13 Soviet league titles and nine Soviet Cups. In 1975 and 1986, they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup.
