🏁 Food City 500 History & Highlights
The Food City Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway has been a fixture on the NASCAR calendar since 1961. For the first three decades, NASCAR raced on the asphalt surface. NASCAR Hall of Famer and multiple-times champion Joe Weatherly won the first race, the Southeastern 500. The race kept that name from 1961 through 1979, with one change in 1976 for a shortened race: the Southeastern 400. The track was extended from 0.5 miles to its current 0.533-mile length in 1970. The 1979 race saw seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt take his maiden victory, not only after leader and triple champion Cale Yarborough, but also Buddy Baker, crashed.
The 1980 edition of the race saw a change in sponsorship. Run as the Valleydale Southeastern 500, Earnhardt won yet again. Valleydale remained the title sponsor but with slightly different names for the races: the Valleydale 500 (from 1981 to 1986) and the Valleydale Meats 500 (1987-1991).
Food City would take over title sponsorship in 1992 and hold it as the Food City 500 until 2010. At that time, the race switched to a concrete surface for the race. Three-time race winner Rusty Wallace won his fourth win at Bristol in 1993, in the first race on the new surface. The 2003 race marked the 2,000th in NASCAR Cup Series history, with 2004 champion Kurt Busch taking the win. The 2011 race was renamed the Jeff Byrd 500 presented by Food City as a way to honor Bristol Motor Speedway President and General Manager Jeff Byrd. Byrd died in October 2010. The race would return to the title of the Food City 500 from 2012 to 2014.
In 2015, organizers changed the name again to “Food City 500 in Support of Steve Byrnes And Stand Up To Cancer” to support broadcaster Steve Byrnes, who was diagnosed with cancer. The race was once again the Food City 500 from 2016 to 2019 before changing again in 2020. Organizers wanted to honor grocery store employees working during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the race was changed to the Food City Presents the Supermarket Heroes 500.
One year later, the race was announced as the only race on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar to be on a new surface. Two-time champion Joey Logano won the first race on this new surface in 2021 which was postponed one day due to flash flooding.
Wallace has the record for the most wins with six on the asphalt or concrete surface. Kyle Busch has six as well, with five on concrete/asphalt. Earnhardt and triple-champion Darrell Waltrip are tied for second with five.
