🏁 EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix History & Highlights
The EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix is one of the newer races on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule. Two other NASCAR races made their debut in 2021: the Ally 400, at the Nashville Superspeedway, and the Verizon 200, at the Brickyard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Circuit of the Americas opened in 2012 with the biggest racing events, featuring Formula One (for the United States Grand Prix) and MotoGP (the Motorcycle Grand Prix of the Americas). The Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth opposed the development due to a clause in its agreement with NASCAR that prevented more races in the region.
After lots of back-and-forths between Circuit of the Americas (COTA) president Bobby Epstein and NASCAR officials and exhibitions by NASCAR drivers for big events, NASCAR announced it was adding a race at COTA for the 2021 season. The Texas Motor Speedway would instead hold the NASCAR All-Star Race. Safety changes were subsequently made to COTA to accommodate stock cars.
2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott won the inaugural race in 2021 which was shortened to just 54 laps due to heavy rain. The race was held in May of that year.
In 2022, Ross Chastain won the race held in March. The 2022 edition of the race was extended to 69 laps due to an overtime finish.
