🏁 Go Bowling at The Glen History & Highlights
The NASCAR Go Bowling at The Glen began as The Glen 101.2 in 1957. Buck Baker won that inaugural race prior to a hiatus from 1958 to 1963. The race returned to the Cup Series schedule in 1964 as The Glen 151.8 with Billy Wade winning the event. Marvin Panch won the next year before the event went on another hiatus from 1966 to 1985.
NASCAR returned to Watkins Glen in 1986 for The Budweiser At The Glen. The event used the 2.45-mile short course, the same layout used for the current season. Tim Richmond won the first event in its return to the series. Rusty Wallace and Ricky Rudd traded wins from 1987 to 1990. Wallace won in 1987 and 1989 with Rudd taking the win in 1988 and 1990. Ernie Irvan won the 1991 race which saw the title of the event shortened to Budweiser At The Glen.
In 1991, J.D. McDuffie died in a crash and organizers changed the layout for the following season. After another serious crash during an IMSA race, a chicane — the “Inner Loop” — was added before the Outer Loop corner. That layout is still used today.
Kyle Petty won the first event with the new layout in 1992. This preceded a run of three straight wins for Mark Martin. During this time, the title changed to The Bud At The Glen and the event kept the title through the 1998 race. From 1997 to 2001, Jeff Gordon won four of five NASCAR races. In 1999, the event changed its name to the Frontier @ the Glen. In 2000 and 2001, the event changed titles again to the Global Crossing @ The Glen.
Like Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart had a run of success at Watkins Glen. From 2002 to 2009, he won five of eight editions of the race. Title sponsorship changed multiple times during this run, starting with the Sirius Satellite Radio At the Glen (2002-2005), AMD at the Glen (2006), Centurion Boats at the Glen (2007-2008), and the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen (2009-2011).
Juan Pablo Montoya won the second of his two career Cup Series races with a win in 2010. Marcus Ambrose won events in 2011 and 2012, when the event changed names again to the Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen.
The race changed names again from 2013 to 2016 to the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen. This stretch saw a different winner each year: Kyle Busch (2013), A.J. Allmendinger (2014), Joey Logano (2015), and Denny Hamlin (2016). Martin Truex Jr. won the I Love New York 355 at The Glen in 2017.
Since 2018, the event’s been titled the Go Bowling at The Glen. Hendrick Motorsports drivers have won each year since the change, with Chase Elliott winning in 2018 and 2019 and Kyle Larson winning in 2021 and 2022. The event was moved to Daytona in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stewart has the most event wins with five.
