Hojlund, Maguire Could Return for United

Manchester United responded to a 3-1 Manchester Derby defeat by grabbing a victory over Everton last Saturday. Alejandro Garnacho did well to earn an early penalty for the Red Devils and Bruno Fernandes stepped up and converted despite Everton keeper Jordan Pickford diving the right way. Garnacho won another penalty for United before the end of the first half, which Marcus Rashford scored. The match finished 2-0 and Man United stayed in sixth place in the Premier League.

So far on their FA Cup schedule, Manchester United have come up against Wigan Athletic, Newport County and Nottingham Forest. United easily defeated Wigan, 2-0 but needed to pull off a comeback to beat fourth-tier club Newport County, 4-2. In the fifth round, Casemiro scored the game’s only goal at Nottingham Forest. Although Casemiro is back in action after an injury layoff, United have quite a few players who could miss this one.

In three games with Rasmus Hojlund out, United have found the net just twice from open play. The Danish striker is expected to return for this Quarter-Final clash. Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka could also return for this one. However, Lisandro Martinez, Anthony Martial, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw could all be out for Sunday’s match. United have been inconsistent this season and injuries certainly haven’t helped.

Liverpool Show No Mercy

Liverpool showed absolutely no mercy to Sparta Prague in Thursday’s Europa League Round of 16 second leg. The Reds entered the night with a 5-1 lead on aggregate and they were up 9-1 less than 15 minutes in. Sparta Prague simply could not handle Liverpool’s press and some individual errors gifted Liverpool goals. Bobby Clark scored his first Liverpool goal in the match, while Darwin Nuñez, Mo Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai also found the net. Cody Gakpo scored twice as well as Liverpool managed a 6-1 win on the night and an 11-2 aggregate victory.

They’re the favorites to win the Europa League in Jürgen Klopp’s final season and can go toe-to-toe with any team left. Even with all of their injuries, Liverpool managed a 1-1 draw vs. Manchester City in a blockbuster Premier League match last weekend. A look at the Liverpool standings shows they’re in second place in the EPL on goal difference as they’re level on points with leaders Arsenal.

The injury situation may have gotten even worse on Thursday as Clark, a 19-year old midfielder left the match early. Center back Ibrahima Konate and midfielders Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch are listed as doubtful. Meanwhile all of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago, Diogo Jota, Alisson and Joel Matip are expected to be out on Sunday. Klopp has proven to be excellent at adjusting his lineups and he’ll continue to do so.

Match Analysis & Odds

This is the only FA Cup Quarter-Final fixture where the visitor is the favorite. Manchester United will take some confidence from the draw they managed at Anfield earlier this season, though and feel that they can beat visiting Liverpool. United are +300 underdogs for this one, while Liverpool come in at -120 odds.

The Manchester United vs Liverpool odds also list a draw at a +300 price and Liverpool will undoubtedly want to avoid extra time here. Granted, they do have the international break coming up for their squad to get healthy again. While Liverpool’s ATS odds are the same as their moneyline odds, Man United +0.5 sits at -110.

In the 2023-24 season, Old Trafford hasn’t exactly been the fortress it once was. Manchester United are just 10-1-8 at home this season, in all competitions. Liverpool losses have been exceedingly rare this season, as they’ve fallen just four times in 44 matches. Manchester United were the last team to shut Liverpool out but bettors should note the Reds have scored three goals or more in eight of their last 12. Over three goals are priced at -115 odds for what should be an exciting match.
