Giants Creeping Up On NL West Lead
The late MLB scores allow most of the West Coast teams to fly under the radar to most of the country. Most of us conceded that the NL West had turned into a two-team race between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Diego Padres have underachieved all season long, while the Giants started 6-12 (-585 units) through 18 games, and 18-23 (-588 units) through May 15th, putting them 8.5 games of the division lead. Since, San Fran is 19-9 (+775 units), the best mark in baseball in that span. Right-hander John Brebbia (2-0, 2.35) gets the start tonight, but this is going to be a bullpen game. Expect Brebbia to throw one or two innings. Then they’ll turn it over to a pen that is 12th in baseball with a 3.82 era.
The Boston native has been terrific all season long, but the righty appears to be getting stronger. Brebbia hasn’t allowed an earned run in for straight appearances, although that only encompasses five innings of work. The former Elon University star hasn’t given up multiple earned runs since April 27th. The Giants are 17-11 in games Brebbia has pitched in. Dodgers Get Late Night Victory, Continue Homestand
Freedy Freeman capped off the Dodgers’ comeback with an 11th-inning single, helping the Dodgers take two of three from the Chicago White Sox after falling behind 4-0. Chris Taylor crushed a grand slam to tie the game in the sixth, paving the way for Freeman’s heroics. It appears that Los Angeles will be without Max Muncy until at least Saturday. Muncy is battling a hamstring injury that will force him to miss his fourth straight game.
The Dodgers have not announced who will get the start, but word is that Emmet Sheehan will get his first MLB start. Sheehan is likely to be called up from AA-Tulsa where he owned a 1.86 era. The right-hander throws in the upper 90’s, at times, touches 100. Sheehan has 88 minor league strikeouts, good for third in all of minor league baseball. The Dodgers are scuffling along and now have a AA starter making his major league debut against the red-hot Giants, even if it is a bullpen game. This is where the experience takes over. The book on Sheehn is that he has an exceptional command to go with his heater.
The Giants don’t have a book on the 23-year-old, and that is the element that most bettors forget. This is still a Dodgers team that has bashed more homers than anyone in baseball (116), making them dangerous in every frame. We think the combination of an unfamiliar starter, home-field advantage against a team they’ve dominated, and a better line-up is more than enough reason to side with the Dodgers (-145) tonight.
