Southern Miss Golden Eagles 2023 Future Odds

Golden Eagles Will Have Tough Time Matching 2022 Win Total

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles had a strong season in 2022. After winning three games in 2020 and 2021, winning six games in 2022 was a big accomplishment. Add a victory in the Lending Tree Bowl and Southern Miss has momentum heading into 2023. But Southern Miss also has a brutal schedule that sees non-conference games with Florida State, Mississippi State, and Tulane. The Golden Eagles future odds reflect the difficulty of the schedule.

Southern Miss Rushing Attack Needs to Take Over

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have some questions at quarterback entering the season. Sophomore Zach Wilcke has the most experience with the team, but Houston transfer Holman Edwards and Clemson transfer Billy Wiles are also in contention for the starting job. The competition isn’t a bad thing.

The team has some solid running backs with Frank Gore Jr. being joined by Antavious Willis and Memphis transfer Rodrigues Clark. Both looked good in the team’s spring scrimmage. Gore also threw four touchdown passes on just 15 attempts.

Southern Miss returns its No. 2 and No. 3 wideouts, so should be in decent shape. The offensive line should be OK. It needs to open some holes for the running backs, as rushing goes hand-in-hand with victories for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss was 6-1 when rushing for 130 or more yards and 1-5 when it didn’t.

The defense is a little better than average. There are a few good players returning and a few decent players have also moved on. Southern Miss allowed 23.5 points per game a year ago. The Golden Eagles were a little better against the run than the pass. The Golden Eagles were No. 32 in the NCAAF rankings against the run, allowing 3.7 yards per attempt.

Safety Jay Stanley is the team’s best defensive back. A return to health by Hayes Maples will help after he missed all of last season with an injury.

National Championship Odds: Not This Season

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles future odds on winning the title are +100000. It was the same last year. Like last year, it’s not going to happen this season.

Conference Odds: Highly Unlikely Given Strength of Sun Belt

The Sun Belt Conference won’t be mistaken for the SEC. But they do play decent football. There are a number of good teams in the Sun Belt and Southern Miss looks to be behind a number of them. The Golden Eagles futures odds of +2500 are actually the same as they were a year ago to win the Sun Belt Conference. But as was the case last year, there are eight teams with lower odds to win.

Regular Season Wins: Southern Miss Can’t Falter

This is where things get interesting. If Southern Miss wins the games it should, it will wind up with five wins. The NCAAF predictions should have the Eagles favored in five games. If they take care of business, they’ll at least push against the season win total of 5.0. If Southern Miss can win one of the games it’s expected to lose, a sixth win is a possibility. But that’s provided the Golden Eagles win the other games.

Southern Miss should be on the right side of the NCAAF scores in the opener against Alcorn State. But then comes games against FSU, Tulane, and Arkansas State. The Golden Eagles could easily be 1-3 but can win at Arkansas State. Home games against Texas State and Old Dominion give Southern Miss a solid chance to get back to 3-3 or 4-2.

Games at South Alabama and Appalachian State won’t be easy, but the Golden Eagles have a very winnable game against Monroe at home. Things get tough with trips to Louisiana and Mississippi State before a final home game against Troy.

The Golden Eagles season win total could come down to the road games at Arkansas State and South Alabama. A win in either of those games will set up Southern Miss nicely to get that sixth victory.
