Nevada Wolf Pack Future Odds 2023

Plenty of Transfers Being Counted On to Get Nevada Trending in Right Direction

Nevada’s Winless 2023 Season: Hope for Better Days in Mountain West?

After winning the first two games of the 2022 season, things unraveled for Nevada with 10 straight losses and that included one against Incarnate Word, a program out of the Football Championship Subdivision level. That comes into play when trying to make sense of the Nevada Wolf Pack future odds.

Nevada was active on the transfer portal, finishing second in the conference by securing commitments from 13 transfers. Eight of those are coming in from the Pac-12.

The Wolf Pack will not be easing into the season as the opener is against Southern California and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams.

Former Pac-12 Recruits Look to Thrive at Nevada

The roster could look much different thanks to the large number of transfers joining the program and perhaps that is why the Nevada Wolf Pack future odds are calling for a little more success in 2023.

Defensive lineman Henry Ikahihifo, linebacker Malcolm McClure, tight end Keleki Latu and running back Ashton Hayes all come in from Cal, running back Sean Dollars transferred from Oregon with linebacker Jackson LaDuke also coming in from Oregon. Colorado quarterback Brendon Lewis and USC receiver John Jackson join the list of former Pac-12 recruits landing in Reno.

Dollars and Hayes will help try to ease the loss of 900-yard rusher Toa Taua. Taua also caught 41 passes so that production also needs to be replaced.

At quarterback, Lewis was the starter at Colorado in 2021 when he had six touchdown passes and no interceptions in back-to-back games against Oregon and Oregon State. He was gone from the Colorado program by the middle of the 2022 season.

Most of the top receivers are back as that could play a role in the Nevada Wolf Pack future odds.

The defense does feature promising cornerbacks Jaden Dedman and Isaiah Essissima as they combined to break up 17 passes while linebacker Drue Watts displayed plenty of potential as a freshman.

Nevada’s recruiting classes have ranked fifth among Mountain West teams in 2021 and sixth in 2023 so perhaps that talent will start to shine.

National Championship Odds: Not Going to Happen

Perhaps there are sports in the 2023-24 academic year when Nevada is in the running for the national title, but it won’t be happening on the football field.

Nevada would be thrilled to be playing in a bowl game after last year’s 2-10 season. Expecting to have any chance to factor into the national title race is a little too ambitious when looking at the NCAA football predictions.

Conference Odds: Plenty of Work to Be Done

Nevada hasn’t won a conference title since capturing the 2010 WAC title. Since moving into the Mountain West in 2012, it has been a bit of a grind even though the Wolf Pack have played in seven bowl games since joining the conference.

The first conference game of the season comes on the road against defending Mountain West champion Fresno State and there is also a trip to face San Diego State so the title hopes might be over before the end of October.

Nevada is 10th in the odds to win the Mountain West title with only New Mexico and Hawaii having longer odds than the Wolf Pack’s +5000 number.

Regular Season Wins: Looking to Double Their Pleasure

A season ago, Nevada won two games. The expected regular season win total is set at four for the 2023 season with -125 odds to go over and -105 to go under so that is a sign of progress.

The season-ending 10-game losing streak included two one-score defeats so that could be playing a role in the win total being put at four. One of the wins in 2022 was against Texas State and the Bobcats are on the schedule once again as is a matchup with an Idaho program that plays at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Those are two NCAA football games where Nevada could be favored.

If Nevada wins those two games, are there three additional wins on the schedule? UNLV, New Mexico, and Hawaii all come to Reno so perhaps there is a glimmer of hope when it comes to the NCAA football scores.

To Make The Playoffs: Not a Chance

There will be a national title contender on display in Nevada’s season opener. However, it will not be the Wolf Pack. Host Southern California is currently sixth in the odds to win the national championship and could very well be one of the four teams on the College Football Playoff field.

How far away is Nevada from reaching that level? Nevada is listed as a 38-point underdog to the Trojans provides an answer to that question.
