Los Angeles Looking To Eliminate Penalties

The Los Angeles Chargers have shot themselves in the foot multiple times this season. It’s not some rookie shooting themselves in the foot.

It’s captain and veteran Derwin James.

James had led the league with three unnecessary roughness penalties in four games played this season. In his first five seasons, he had been flagged for the same penalty just three times in his first five seasons.

James believes that his hit against Ashton Dulin last season during a Monday Night Football game is the reason why he’s drawn more attention from the officials. In that game, James was ejected for hitting a defenseless receiver.

On Monday night against the Cowboys, he was hit with two 15-yard penalties. In tight games, these types of penalties will ruin games and decide wins from losses.

The Chargers’ fanbase wasn’t excited about these penalties, either.

ESPN kept showing Chargers superfan, Merrianne Do, a season ticket holder of the Chargers. Her facial expressions throughout the game were hilarious and she went viral for it. Do is a diehard Chargers fan and went through all the emotions in a three-point loss on Monday.

The Chargers probably should hire her. She could be like the Chargers’ version of Fireman Ed, who gets the crowd rowdy for Jets games. They would capitalize in a big way by doing that.

Like Do, the fans want a competitive team. Eliminating big penalties will help win games.

Speaking Of Super Fans…

Since Taylor Swift came to the Bears-Chiefs game on September 24, Kansas City is 4-0, with massive wins against the Bears, Jets, Vikings, and Broncos.

The defense hasn’t allowed more than 20 points, and Travis Kelce remains the show’s some thought that Swift’s appearances would distract the Chiefs in their quest to win a Super Bowl. But that hasn’t been the case.

Since Swift became a Chiefs fan and started officially dating Travis Kelce, the Chiefs haven’t lost.

The relationship is so mainstream that even head coach Andy Reid has had some things to say about it.

Reid spoke to Donovan McNabb on “The Five Spot” and talked about the first time he had met Swift. Reid acknowledged that she knew her from Philadelphia, where Swift grew up. Swift’s dad is a major football fan, too.

Reid likes to think that he set Swift and Kelce up. But said that Swift is a good girl and that she’s glad she’s here.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s break down the Chargers vs Chiefs matchup odds for the big rivalry.

Chargers vs Chiefs Matchup Odds

At home, Kansas City is a 5.5-point favorite against the Los Angeles Chargers. The total for this NFL matchup is 47.5, with the Over juiced up to -115.

The Chargers have only won a single game against the spread this season. They’re 1-3-1 against the spread, while the Under has hit in three of five this game year. Los Angeles lost its last game against the spread, with a 20-17 loss to the Cowboys as a 1.5-point underdog.

On the other hand, the Chiefs are 4-2 against the spread but have watched the Under hit in four of six games. We’re not used to seeing Unders in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. But that’s been the significant difference this season for the Chiefs.

However, in this series against the Chargers, the Over has hit in six of the last ten games. The Chargers have also covered in six games, while the Chiefs have won seven of the ten straight up.

What Happened To Los Angeles’ Defense?

The Chargers have one of the worst defenses in the NFL this season. They’ve allowed 420.4 yards per game, including 317.8 yards in the air.

The Chargers have a weak secondary and have also struggled in the run game despite allowing only 102.6 yards per game. The only thing the Chargers’ defense is good for is that pass rush.

However, the Chiefs have performed well as an offensive line. The offense for Kansas City has gained nearly 390 yards, with 270.7 yards in the air.

Mahomes is in for a big game. He hasn’t had his best season as a quarterback, but that’s also because he doesn’t have much talent in recent years.

Still, he has Travis Kelce, who has gained 346 yards with three touchdowns on 36 catches in five games this season.

Kansas City’s Success Isn’t Because of Its Offense

How are the Chiefs winning if the Kansas City offense isn’t special?

It’s due to the defense.

The Chiefs typically sit in the middle of the NFL regarding defense. But not this year. During their five-game winning streak, the defense has allowed no more than 20 points in any game. This season, they’ve also held NFL teams to under 300 yards per game.

The secondary has played lights out, and the pass rush got much better when Chris Jones decided to sign his extension with the Chiefs earlier in the year.

The Chargers have a great offense and will be a challenge for the Chiefs. They’ve earned over 380 yards per game, with over 275 of those yards in the air. Justin Herbert has a great connection with Keenan Allen, and the Chargers are a great offense with Austin Ekeler back in the mix.

The Chiefs’ defense will make more plays.

Patrick Mahomes is second on the NFL MVP odds list at +450, trailing only Tua Tagovailoa. The NFL football schedule will get a bit tougher in a few weeks. So they’ll want to scratch and claw to win this game, especially at home.

Take the NFL spread with the Chiefs at -5.5.
