David Blough’s Stats: The Unexpected Hero Arizona Needs?

Journeyman Quarterback Could Be Good for Moribund Cardinals

David Blough and the Arizona Cardinals should play like they have nothing to lose. That’s what it felt like in Friday’s thrilling preseason victory over the Denver Broncos. Blough led the team to a last-second comeback as Arizona fans had something to cheer for, which could be a rare thing this coming season. David Blough’s stats are modest. But his impact has already been significant.

How Does Blough Fit in With Current Cardinals?

Blough currently is listed as the third quarterback on the Cardinals’ depth chart. This is due to Kyler Murray, the team’s franchise star, being hurt and likely out for 2023. Colt McCoy slots in as the team’s incumbent starter with Clayton Tune as the backup. But with last week’s heroics, Blough might have just supplanted Tune.

“I think a big part of everybody’s story if you get to this point is redemption,” Blough said after the game. “You only get so many opportunities, and to capitalize on them is a good feeling.”

Indeed, David Blough’s stats reveal he completed 8-of-14 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. He did all this in the fourth quarter as new head coach Jonathan Gannon benched Tune in favor of him. Tune went 13-of-23 for 135 yards with one touchdown and interception each.

Now, it becomes more interesting how Gannon will utilize Blough moving forward. The Cardinals are on top of the preseason NFL standings. It may be an exhibition game, but winning has been a rare occurrence in Glendale in the last two years.

Of course, Blough has his work cut out for him. The Cardinals won’t win too many games with an NFL box score of 18-17. But Blough also had to work with other backups like himself. His true measure becomes how he performs when he gets more reps with the first team. That could be coming in the next few preseason games.

David Blough’s Player Profile & Stats

Blough came to the NFL as an undrafted player in 2019. He played for four years in Purdue and was named to the Third-team All-Big Ten in his final season. The Cleveland Browns signed him but then traded him to Detroit. Due to injuries to Detroit’s quarterbacks, Blough started five games. He remained with Detroit until 2022 where he was acquired by Arizona off of Minnesota’s practice squad.

Career Stats

David Blough’s stats mainly come from his five-game stint as a starter for Detroit in 2019. This was also his rookie NFL season. He then started two more games for Arizona last year.

Blough or anyone on the Cardinals came near the NFL passing leaders of 2022. The team was a mess as injuries and a turnover at the front office led to plenty of dysfunction. But with a new regime in 2023, Blough can start fresh. He’s off to a riveting start.
