If the San Francisco 49ers aren’t the best team in the NFL, they’re certainly close. The 49ers are 2-0, having scored 30 points in back-to-back weeks.

Christian McCaffrey had his second straight 100-yard game in San Francisco’s 30-23 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown. Brock Purdy (17-of-25) added 206 yards through the air, and Deebo Samuel led the 49ers in receiving with six catches for 63 yards. Ultimately, all that kept San Francisco from covering as a 7.5-point favorite was a field goal as time expired.

It’s no secret why oddsmakers remain bullish on San Francisco. The 49ers are coming off back-to-back trips to the NFC Championship. They’ve managed to keep most of their core intact while adding key pieces like McCaffrey, who was acquired last season via trade.

They also found a bargain in quarterback Brock Purdy, the 262nd and last player taken in the 2022 NFL Draft. After undergoing offseason surgery to repair a torn UCL in his elbow, Purdy has returned to complete 66.7% of his passes for 426 yards and two scores. San Francisco is a currently a +275 favorite to win the NFC. It’s also +700 to win Super Bowl LVIII, matching the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs for the best odds. Whether it can cash in on those odds will largely depend on health, as is the case for most NFL teams.

Saquon’s Health a Concern

After a dismal start against the Arizona Cardinals, the New York Giants avoided an 0-2 start in the NFL standings thanks to an inspired comeback behind Daniel Jones. Jones passed for 321 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 59 yards and a score, as New York outscored Arizona 31-8 in the second half Sunday en route to a dramatic and potentially season-saving 31-28 victory.

Now the attention turns to star running back Saquon Barkley, who sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter of their win. Barkley, who rushed for 63 yards and scored twice, was originally estimated to miss two-to-three weeks. However, when speaking to reporters Tuesday, head coach Brian Daboll didn’t rule out the possibility of Barkley returning against San Francisco.

Losing Barkley for any length of time would obviously be a significant blow for New York. He’s still arguably their best playmaker, and the Giants have little depth behind him. Keep in mind, the Giants may also be without standout left tackle Andrew Thomas, who injured his hamstring in the 40-0 Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Handicapping the Game

New York will need all the help it can get to beat San Francisco. The Giants were among the NFL’s biggest surprises last season, which is why Daboll earned NFL Coach of the Year honors. But this is a particularly brutal draw for them — in San Francisco, on a short week. As it is, the Giants are flawed. Their defense, in particular, is a concern. Through two weeks, they’ve yet to record a sack or force a turnover. They’re also not healthy at the moment.
