It was five seasons ago when the Baltimore Ravens decided to part ways with Joe Flacco. The Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets decided he wasn’t the answer. Out of football at the beginning of the year, the Cleveland Browns signed Flacco to the practice squad after the season-ending injury to Deshaun Watson.

After P.J. Walker struggled and Dorian Thompson-Robinson was injured, Flacco became the starting quarterback and the Joe Flacco stats have been quite impressive.

Flacco threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns in leading Cleveland to a 37-20 victory over the New York Jets in Week 17. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Browns, who are second in the AFC’s NFL standings.

The Browns quickly jumped out in front, but the Jets pulled to within 27-14 after Jermaine Johnson returned a Flacco interception 37 yards for a touchdown. However, Flacco responded with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Ford, putting the Browns back in front by 20.

It was the fourth straight 300-yard game for Flacco, who is 4-1 as the team’s starting quarterback. In just five games, Flacco’s NFL passing stats show he’s thrown for 1,616 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s been intercepted eight times. But you take the bad with the good when you’re winning. Cleveland is 4-1 against the NFL odds with Flacco as the starter.

Coming out of Delaware, Flacco wasn’t known to a lot of football fans. But he impressed the Ravens front office in workouts in poor conditions. His strong showings at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine saw Baltimore select him in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Flacco became the Week 1 starter after an injury to Kyle Boller and an illness to backup QB Troy Smith. He never looked back and started every game into the 2015 season. However, his consecutive game streak came to an end in 2015, when he tore his ACL.

Flacco stayed with Baltimore through the 2018 season. With the Ravens, the Joe Flacco stats show 38,245 passing yards good for 212 touchdowns and 136 interceptions. He led the Ravens to the Super Bowl XLVII championship, where he was the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Flacco was traded to the Denver Broncos in February, 2019. But he played just eight games for the Broncos before suffering a neck injury. The Joe Flacco stats show 1,822 passing yards for six touchdowns and five interceptions. However, Flacco was waived for failing his physical when he returned.

Flacco signed with the Jets to be a backup in 2020. He started four games after Sam Darnold was injured. But the Jets lost all four games. Flacco threw for 864 yards, six touchdowns and was intercepted three times.

The Eagles signed Flacco to be the backup to Jalen Hurts in 2021. He didn’t play a game for for the Eagles. But Philadelphia traded him back to the Jets after N.Y. starter Marc Wilson was injured, .

Flacco played seven games over two seasons in his second stint with New York. He threw for 1,389 yards and eight touchdowns with three interceptions. The Jets didn’t resign Flacco for 2023. That left him on the sidelines until the Browns came calling.

For his career, the Joe Flacco stats have him passing for 43,936 yards and 245 touchdowns. But he’s also thrown for 3,233 yards and 25 touchdowns in the playoffs. He’s thrown 155 regular season interceptions and 10 more in the NFL playoffs.

The Cleveland Browns are 8-5 and this close to clinching a playoff spot thanks to a gutsy 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. And we have to thank Joe Flacco for it. Yes, that Flacco who led the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl title. He’s back as the Browns’ fourth quarterback of the NFL season thanks to injuries. And despite being 38 and having sparsely played, Joe Flacco’s NFL stats prove he’s “still got it.”

Joe Flacco’s Stats for 2023

Flacco is to the Browns as Nick Foles was to the Eagles?

We have seen this before. The starting quarterback of a Super Bowl-caliber team goes down only for the backup to take over and lead the team to the Promised Land. This of course was the 2017-18 Philadelphia Eagles who saw Nick Foles go from riding the bench to being Super Bowl MVP. Does Cleveland have something like that with Flacco?

Yes and no. One, the former Raven already has a Super Bowl MVP in his pocket. And two, Joe Flacco’s NFL stats show he’s good enough to lead the Browns, a top-10 defensive team, to a long NFL playoff run. Against Jacksonville, Flacco threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns. He did have two turnovers and slowed down towards the end. But Cleveland still won.

If Flacco continues to play this well, Cleveland is surely going to make the playoffs. Its next four games are relatively winnable NFL matchups. It would be quite the story should Flacco lead this franchise, which he has spent most of his career owning, into an unlikely playoff run.

Flacco’s Career and Current Stats

Flacco will always be remembered as a decent quarterback who played on some strong NFL teams. This is why he has a career QB record of 100-82 despite having a career passer rating of only 84.0. Still, Flacco has delivered when it matters. And with Cleveland, all he has to be is “solid.”

The Browns Still Have Work To Do

Given the latest NFL results, we can’t fault folks for getting excited about Flacco and the Browns. However, this team is still shorthanded and needs serious work on some fronts. Several key Cleveland Browns players are banged up or missing like running back Nick Chubb, cornerback Denzel Ward, and wide receiver Amari Cooper.

On top of that, the defense has a major weakness: red zone efficiency. The Browns allow the fewest yards per game (263). But they are just 14th in scoring defense (20.9) thanks to a porous red zone conversion rate: 67.6%, which is 28th overall.

Joe Flacco’s NFL stats may just be a distraction given the scrutinies quarterbacks face. While he helps the offense score, the defense will also have to hold its end of the bargain.
