Retirement Seems Like Tony Ferguson’s Best Option

The Legend of “El Cucuy” May Come to an End as He Faces a 7-Fight Losing Streak in UFC

The Good Old Days 🥊

Do I want to see Tony Ferguson retire? No, I certainly do not. But the question is, should Tony Ferguson retire following his seventh consecutive loss at UFC 296 this past weekend in Vegas?

“El CuCuy” has been involved in UFC rumors since he debuted for the promotion in 2012. But over a decade later, he’s been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Tony Ferguson has released a message on Instagram following his defeat to British lightweight rising star Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296 on Saturday evening.

The 39-year-old entered the battle with a record of six consecutive losses and was decisively defeated by Pimblett, who nearly ended the match in the first round before ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory over the American.

Following his seventh consecutive loss, UFC president Dana White openly acknowledged his desire for Tony to retire at the post-fight news conference.

The renowned 155 lb fighter has recently communicated his ambitions for the future to his internet fanbase, suggesting his intention to persist in the sport.

“Love my fans and supporters. You are all fuck*ng fire. I met a lot of you tonight; keep the faith, MF’s. One foot in front of the other bullsh*t. Remember what I said, crew,” he wrote on Instagram.

As much as I’d love to wake up and remember a UFC 296 card where T-Ferg choked Pimblett into submission, and we rejoiced in a comeback story of the ages, like many of you, I have to face reality, and such a sentiment is an alternative universe we simply aren’t going to experience.

I will, however, at this time, take a moment to remember what a fuck*ng legend this man became.

Despite his social media comments, I’m talking as if Ferguson is already retired. That’s because we’ll never see the man who obtained a 12-fight win streak and entertained us with his Khabib hatred for many years.

And should he return for one, two, or however many more fights, we are unquestionably going to be watching a former shell of the Tony Ferguson that won our hearts many moons ago.

It pains me to say it, but retirement is the smart move. That being said, hiring David Goggins’ assistance proves that Tony hasn’t made the wisest decisions lately. Probably, Pimblett won’t be his last rodeo, and who knows?… hopefully, the UFC can throw him a bone via a fighter of a similar age, experiencing a similar downtrend, and one where we can see “El Cucuy” go out on top; where he belongs!

Busting bookmakers and taking their money is his greatest joy in life. He’s been around the block more than once, knows the players both on and off the field of battle, and uses his experience to serve the bookies a heaping plate of humble pie washed down by a warm glass of their salty tears. You can find him in any number of Vegas books, sniping weak lines and getting paid to do it.
