Value Odds with Dariush

The Iranian-American was knocked out by Charles Oliveira at UFC 289, but that doesn’t mean he should be the +220 underdog with UFC odds.

Many fighters have suffered a similar fate and bounced back against easier UFC fighters, so Dariush shouldn’t be underrated.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

The 34-year-old scored a win over Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 280, which earned him a spot against Oliveira, and fighting Tsarukyan shouldn’t be too much different.

He has had a busy UFC schedule and he was expected to fight Dustin Poirier, but the fight fell through.

“I actually got a call for the possibility of fighting Dustin Poirier a couple of weeks ago on (UFC 295),” Dariush said. “They called me for that and said, ‘Would you be willing?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, of course. My weight’s good. I’m obviously in camp right now.’ … It didn’t materialize.”

He believes this fight will be hard, and he could be right as Dariush vs Tsarukyan lines suggest. However, we think he has a good chance at scoring the upset.

Is Tsarukyan a False Favorite?

Dariush vs Tsarukyan lines are giving the favorite plenty of respect, but this is the hardest fight of his career.

The Armenian comes off a third-round knockout against Joaquim Silva, but he was a 12-5 fighter, so it wasn’t a tough test.

Three fights back he lost to Gamrot, who lost to Dariush, so the form favors the underdog.

Despite this, the sportsbook has great confidence in the 27-year-old. As the younger fighter, he has that advantage, but he hasn’t had nearly as much experience in the UFC as Dariush.

We’re not surprised by the odds, but we expected Tsarukyan to be around -160 to win, which is a better line.

As a -275 chance, bettors are forced to take a short line for a fighter who hasn’t shown enough in the UFC in our eyes.

He believes he needs a knockout to secure a future title fight.

“If I’m going to win barely, people are going to talk, ‘Oh Oliveira knocked him out, you just barely win him, what are you talking about?’ So that’s why I’ve got to perform very well and knock him out,” he said. “To be honest, I like Dariush a lot. I like the fighter, I like the guy, so I’ve got to give him respect.”

A Big Lightweight Upset

Dariush winning would send shockwaves in the lightweight division, but we’re expecting him to test the favorite.

The +220 odds are an excellent price, and one we can’t turn down. He’s a much better fighter than the odds suggest, and we would have been happy to take him at +140.

We’re not disrespecting the talent of Tsarukyan, but this a numbers game. He’s not a value fighter, and if bettors get +220 for Dariush every fight, their betting accounts would be very healthy.
