What Does Diaz vs Masvidal Boxing Rematch Mean for MMA?

MMA and Boxing Purists Do NOT Care for Diaz vs Masvidal II

The Sad State of Ageing MMA Fighters 🥊

What does Diaz vs Masvidal mean for MMA? Well, absolutely nothing because they’re fighting in a damn boxing ring.

I sadly announce that more MMA fighters are topping boxing news because they’ve forgotten which combat sport they specialize in.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

On June 1, 2024, Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz will compete in a 10-round boxing bout. They first crossed paths in 2020, with Masvidal knocking two shades of shit out of Diaz before the referee stepped in and awarded him the BMF title.

However, the stone-cold truth is that the rematch wasn’t required in the cage, so it certainly isn’t something to get excited about in the ring.

What Possesses MMA Athletes to Box?

Monetary gains, plain and simple. There are no other reasons why mixed martial artists are taking up boxing in the latter stages of their careers.

The UFC and Dana White haven’t filled everyone’s pockets enough, and now that their star power and/or winning potential in the octagon has died down, they’re looking towards boxing for a quick payday.

Don’t believe for one minute that any of these guys care about boxing; they don’t. This is obvious, especially when you weigh up their alternative options. One man who’s exempt from such boxing rumors is Conor McGregor. Did he want the money? Sure! But, did he also want to test himself in the boxing ring? Hell yeah.

Askren, Woodley, Silva, and Francis Ngannou

There are levels to this sh*t. Casual combat sports fans may not comprehend, but boxing and professional mixed martial arts are completely different entities, evidenced by the several former UFC fighters—Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, Nate Diaz—who’ve failed to defeat Jake Paul.

“What does Jake Paul have to do with this?” you might ask… He’s a former Disney Channel and social media star who’d spent a fraction of the time training in boxing compared to the MMA experience of the former UFC fighters he defeated in the ring. If that isn’t enough proof that MMA fighters should stick to UFC fights, I don’t know what is.

Then we have Ngannou, who was completely outmatched and couldn’t wake from his slumber when Anthony Joshua flatlined him last Friday.

The aforementioned are just scratching the surface. If you dig deep into the history of MMA fighters switching to boxing, it presents ugly results. Frank Mir, Tito Ortiz, and even Melvin Guillard have attempted to box in the past. What do they all have in common? They all lost!

The light at the end of the tunnel is that Diaz and Masvidal are, at least, boxing from a similar background of training in MMA striking. But even still, legacies are being tarnished, and mixed martial arts fans are being left disappointed, all in the name of money.
