Match With Champions League Implications

Villa Continue to Impress

Aston Villa have continued their strong form and are firmly in the race for a Champions League spot. Villa are in fourth place in the Premier League and Tottenham are just five points behind them.

If Spurs can pick up a win at Villa Park on Sunday, they’ll make the Champions League race a lot more interesting. Granted, the League may get five UCL slots next season based on EPL teams’ performances in European competition but a top four finish guarantees Champions League football.

As both sides go all out for a win here, we’ll preview the Aston Villa vs Tottenham odds.

Aston Villa Coming Off Midweek Draw

Aston Villa went to Amsterdam on Thursday to take on AFC Ajax in the first leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16. In a rare knockout stage appearance in a UEFA competition for Aston Villa, they managed to come away with a scoreless draw. Winter signing Morgan Rogers made his first start for Villa in the match. Now, Villa head back to Birmingham for the second leg next week with a good chance to advance.

For now, all of Unai Emery’s focus will be on Sunday’s match, which is a crucial one for Aston Villa. Villa can go eight points clear of Tottenham with a win and it would signify one giant leap towards Champions League football. Ollie Watkins was quiet at Ajax on Thursday but he’s been key for Aston Villa this season.

He’s second among the EPL goal leaders, with 16 goals and he’s joint-leader in assists with 10. With 26 goal contributions, no Premier League player has been involved in more goals than Watkins this season.

Leon Bailey has also had an excellent season, as the Jamaican winger has registered eight goals and eight assists. Midfielder and designated set piece taker Douglas Luiz is also only one goal away from reaching double digits in the EPL.

Like Tottenham, Villa have struggled a bit on defense recently and have conceded twice in three of their last four matches. For Sunday’s match, bettors can expect Jacob Ramsey, Emiliano Buendia, Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara and Jhon Duran to be out.

Tottenham Causing Chaos

Both teams have scored in each of Tottenham’s last nine Premier League matches. Ange Postecoglou plays a high risk, high reward brand of football but it’s worked more often than not this season. Last weekend, Tottenham fell behind as Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze scored a free kick.

Spurs left it until late as Timo Werner, Cristian Romero and Son Heung-Min all scored later than the 75th minute in a 3-1 win. The win kept Tottenham in fifth place in the EPL ranking.

They’re six points ahead of sixth-placed Manchester United and have been solid both at home and on the road this season. While Tottenham are 10-4 in EPL matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they’ve only lost two Premier League games away from home.

Postecoglou’s men hold a 5-5-2 road record and still haven’t lost a road game in 2024. Tottenham also have a game in hand on Villa, which means they’ll control their own Champions League destiny with a win here.

This season, both Son and Richarlison have reached the 10 Premier League goal threshold. However, Richarlison is dealing with a knee injury that could keep him out of this match. Both Pedro Porro and Pape Sarr are dealing with minor problems but could both be in the squad this weekend. Manor Solomon remains out for Spurs but if Richarlison can’t play, Werner will continue to fill in.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Match Analysis & Odds

Aston Villa are going for the double over Spurs here and the hosts are +140 favorites for this one. This could be one of the most competitive games of the weekend and it is listed as a pick’em. Villa pk comes in at -115 and Tottenham pk displays -105 odds. Watkins and Son are two of the most in form players in the league and it’ll be a treat to see the attackers in action.

Currently, the Aston Villa vs Tottenham odds price Spurs as +165 underdogs and they’ll be eager to end their three game losing streak vs Villa here. A draw (+300) may provide the most value of any of the moneyline options but somehow none of the last 19 fixtures between these two teams have ended level.

Over and under 3.5 goals both sit at -110 odds as this one could be a shootout. Tottenham aren’t shy about inviting pressure and making risky passes to beat the press and start attacks. Their high-risk style is why so many of their matches end in both teams scoring goals. Both teams to score is priced at -300 odds for what should be an entertaining game.
