FA Cup Third Round Matchup

EPL Sides Kick off FA Cup Campaigns

It’s well-known that Tottenham Hotspur haven’t won a major trophy since the 2007-08 season. On Friday, Ange Postecoglou will kick off his first FA Cup campaign as Tottenham manager when Spurs host Burnley in the third round. Newly-promoted Burnley have struggled in their return to the EPL, but don’t rule out a cup run just yet. Tottenham have been one of the most exciting sides to watch in England this season, and they’ve frequently played in shootouts. We’ll look at the chances that’ll happen again as we preview the Tottenham vs Burnley betting odds.

Head-to-Head

Tottenham and Burnley have only played two FA Cup fixtures over the last 50 years. In the 2014-15 season, they also met at this stage and the match finished all square at one. In the replay round, Tottenham overturned a two-goal deficit to win 4-2. In September 2023, Tottenham took down Burnley 5-2 in the Premier League as Son Heung-min scored a hat trick. Spurs have lost just one of their last eight games vs. Burnley, in all competitions. Plus, Burnley don’t have a road win over Tottenham since 1983.

Tottenham Missing Three Players to International Duty

Tottenham closed out 2023 with a 3-1 win over streaking AFC Bournemouth. Spurs’ win ended Bournemouth’s four-game Premier League winning streak, and it was a third straight home victory for Ange Postecoglou’s side. Tottenham have scored at least two goals in each of their last five matches heading into 2024 as well. In the New Year’s Eve match vs. Bournemouth, Pape Matar Sarr, Son Heung-min, and Richarlison were all on the scoresheet.

However, Sarr and Son are set to join up with Senegal and South Korea, respectively, for the Africa Cup of Nations and AFC Asian Cup. Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma will also be away on international duty for Friday’s game. All three have played key roles for Spurs this season, and Son, Tottenham’s captain, is their leading scorer. Expect Postecoglou to adjust his lineup, as a bunch of players are also out injured.

That includes James Maddison, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon. That means a potential front three of Bryan Gil, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski. Meanwhile, left back Destiny Udogie is returning from a suspension for this one. Currently, the Tottenham vs Burnley betting odds still list Spurs as favorites despite all of the absences.

Burnley Performing Better on the Road

A ten-man Burnley put up quite the fight at Aston Villa last Saturday. The Clarets fell behind and equalized twice as both strikers Zeki Amdouni and Lyle Foster got on the scoresheet. Foster’s goal, to level the match at two, came after Sander Berge received his second yellow card of the night. Burnley looked like they had a shot to come away from Birmingham with a point but conceded a late penalty. Villa’s Douglas Luiz stepped up and hit his penalty on the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

It wasn’t all bad for Burnley in the 3-2 loss, but Vincent Kompany’s men are second to last in the Premier League table. Five points from safety, it’ll be difficult for Burnley to stay in the Premier League without reinforcements. Still, they’ll want to give their fans a cup run to remember this season. Strangely enough, they’ve also performed much better on the road than at home this season.

In all competitions, they’re just 1-9 in Burnley and 4-2-7 away. On Friday, Luca Koleosho, Jack Cork and Jordan Beyer may all be sidelined due to injuries. Beyer, a defender, departed the match at Aston Villa in the first half with a thigh problem. Berge will also miss this game due to a suspension. Burnley have conceded over two goals per game in the Premier League this season, and the soccer betting lines certainly reflect that.

Match Analysis & Odds

The FA Cup has produced plenty of third-round upsets, and bettors should not overlook that fact here. Yes, Tottenham are clearly the stronger side here, but a few of their players are off on international duty. The latest Tottenham vs Burnley betting odds price the hosts as -205 favorites for Friday’s match, and Richarlison and Kulusevski are two players to watch in Son’s absence. The duo have combined for 11 goals so far this season.

This could also present an opportunity for Bryan Gil to showcase himself, as opportunities have been few and far between for the Spanish winger. Berge’s absence hurts Burnley a fair bit, but they’ll believe they can come away with a victory here. They’re +475 underdogs for this one, as a draw displays +350 odds.

Bettors can consider Tottenham -1, -1.5 at -105 or Burnley +1, +1.5 at -125. Even though road wins for Burnley have been more common than home victories this season, the Clarets have rarely won at Tottenham. Don’t be surprised to see a wide-open match either, as both over and under three goals sit at -115 odds.
