The Astros Alvarez Making Impact Down The Stretch

Yordan Alvarez Hits 25th Homer, Leads Houston to Top of AL West

The Houston Astros (80-61) are once again looking down at the rest of their division. A glance at the baseball standings shows Houston owning a slim half-game lead over the Seattle Mariners with 22 games left, but despite the minimal lead, it seems like the Astros are once again on a collision course with their sixth AL West title in seven seasons. Today, we focus on the impact that 2-time all-star Yordan Alvarez stats are having on his club and where we anticipate the Astros going as we head towards the postseason.

The Middle of Houston’s Line-Up Will Lead in October

The Houston Astros are once again one of the best pitching teams in Major League Baseball with 63 quality starts (4th), but it’s their consistency from their 3-5 spots in the line-up that is the reason why they’ve caught the Texas Rangers.

Yordan Alvarez’s 2023 stats show a beacon of consistency that sets the table for Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. Alvarez just hit his 26th home run of the season in game three against the Texas Rangers in what was a massive series for both teams to win. Not only did Houston win, but they swept the Rangers, with Alvarez going 4-9 with 4 RBI. Over the last two weeks, the Cuban native is hitting .383 with four homers and 13 RBI. Above all, most impressive may be his .310 average on the road where 18 of his 25 homers have been hit.

When hitting in a count without a ball, 0-0/1-0/ etc, Alvarez is hitting an incredible .365 with 11 homers and 29 RBI. Bregman (.272, 22/92) and Tucker (.290, 26/99), but without Alvarez setting the table in the three-hole it would be hard to imagine this offense putting up the fifth most runs in baseball (729, 5.17 per game). Yordan Alvarez’s 2023 stats are impressive but what impact does he have on betting?

Bettors Have Learned to Lean on Houston

Over the last two seasons when making baseball picks or MLB score predictions, the public knows that the Houston Astros have been one of the reliable wagers and the numbers back that up. Only the Baltimore Orioles (+51.04 units) have produced more of a profit than the Houston Astros (+10.15 units) over the last two seasons.

Houston is 186-117 (.614) in that span, handing bettors more wins than any other team except for the Los Angeles Dodgers (195-105) and the Atlanta Braves (192-109). Yordan Alvarez’s 2023 stats show the left-handed hitter starting his career in 2019 when he played in 87 games followed by just two games in 2020, after having arthroscopic surgery on both knees in 2020. From that point on, Alvarez has played all of his games in a Houston uniform outside of three games in AAA Sugarland this season.

Since 2021, when Alvarez had 144 plate appearances, Houston is a combined 281-184 (.604) with 9.06 units of profit for bettors. As a favorite, they’ve won 62.4% of their games, and 63% as a home favorite. To conclude this deep dive into Yordan Alvarez’s 2023 stats, we think as long as the 26-year-old stays healthy, and there have been some recent issues with his knees, he should lead the charge for the Astros right into a showdown with the Tampa Bay Rays or Baltimore Orioles for a trip to the World Series.
