The West Virginia Mountaineers‘ long road back to contention has to begin at some point, right? Sure, but it may not be this year. The Mountaineers are expected to finish closer to the bottom of the Big 12 standings than the top.

West Virginia Hoping to Trend Back Up

The West Virginia Mountaineers disappointed again in 2022, finishing under .500 (5-7) for the third time in four seasons under head coach Neal Brown. The Mountaineers went just 3-6 in Big 12 play and failed to make a bowl game, leaving Brown on shaky ground as he enters his fifth season at the helm.

The administration has shown a lot of patience with Brown. But the program continues to trend in the wrong direction. The Big 12 is only getting stronger, making West Virginia’s climb back to contention more difficult. Since joining the conference in 2012, the Mountaineers have won only two bowls.

Fixing a defense that allowed 32.9 points a game is a priority. The Mountaineers gave up 40 points or more five times. That’s an unsustainable number, one that’ll seal Brown’s fate if it is not rectified. At least, if they can get improved quarterback play from junior Garrett Greene or freshman Nicco Marchiol, they’ll give themselves a better chance to pick off a couple of wins in 2023-24.

Again, it doesn’t help that the Big 12 is so difficult. Because of that, it could be another long season for Brown and the Mountaineers.

National Championship Odds: No Chance. Seriously, No Chance.

National champions? Yeah, that’s not going to happen. The West Virginia Mountaineers’ future odds have improved from +30000 to +25000. It’s hard to see why given all the challenges they face. The Big 12 is a bear, and West Virginia has been trending in the wrong direction under Brown.

Even if the Mountaineers improve, they still aren’t near ready to compete amongst the big boys again. A bowl? Sure. But the national championship? Absolutely no chance.

Conference Odds: Longshot? Better Yet, No Shot.

West Virginia has never won a Big 12 championship. That’s unlikely to change in the near future. The Mountaineers’ odds have dropped from +7000 to +8000. That matches the second-lowest price on the board, along with BYU and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, Texas, in its last year before leaving for the SEC, is an Even money favorite. Oklahoma is next in line at +350.

The Mountaineers have finished .500 or worse four straight years in Big 12 play. That doesn’t inspire much confidence. Don’t bother trying to cash in here. It is not happening.

Regular Season Wins: Schedule May Be Greatest Obstacle

West Virginia is projected for 4.5 wins, the lowest total in at least a decade. It shouldn’t be difficult to clear, which explains why the Under is juiced to +110. Then again, these are hard times for the Mountaineers.

The NCAAF schedule is daunting, starting with the Sept. 2 opener at No. 7 Penn State. The Mountaineers are currently 20.5-point underdogs (-110) and +850 on the moneyline, according to college football point spreads. They will also host Pittsburgh on Sept. 16 before beginning the gauntlet that is Big 12 play. Two of the Mountaineers’ scheduled Big 12 opponents are in the preseason NCAAF rankings — No. 17 TCU and No. 20 Oklahoma — while Texas Tech is just on the fringes.

The Mountaineers may have to pull off a couple of upsets to hit the Over.

To Make Playoffs: Not Under Consideration

The Mountaineers’ focus should be on returning to a bowl, not the College Football Playoff. That’s too big a hill to climb this season. There aren’t any West Virginia Mountaineers future odds available in this market at the moment.
