The San Francisco 49ers escaped the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Playoff matchup.

The Packers had been one of the most consistent offenses in the NFL over the second half and upset the Dallas Cowboys in an earlier game in the playoffs on the road.

However, the 49ers were having none of it. The Packers only scored 21 points after Dre Greenlaw added two interceptions with eight total tackles.

Greenlaw had the game-clinching interception. When he made the play, all Greenlaw had to do was hit the ground, and the game would be over. However, Greenlaw was interested in some spotlight, so he took off another eight seconds on the clock as he tried to weave his way into the endzone.

It didn’t work out, and his coaches and players weren’t entirely happy with his decision. But ultimately, the 49ers won the game, and now they can all laugh about it.

Greenlaw is in his fifth season in the NFL. He’s spent every year with the 49ers and has 446 total tackles in 62 games.

However, he’s only got one touchdown and was really hunting for another one. Lucky for him, the Niners are back in action on Sunday against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game.
Let’s take a look at the Dre Greenlaw stats in the 2023-’24 season and for his career.

Underrated

Greenlaw had lived in group homes and shelters across Arkansas since he was eight. However, he got an opportunity to play college football at Arkansas and was eventually drafted by the 49ers in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Greenlaw chose to stay with his home school, which certainly paid off.

He added 321 total tackles and secured four sacks in four seasons with the Razorbacks. He also forced four fumbles, recovered three fumbles, and added three pass deflections with three interceptions.

The 49ers are usually very good at finding gems in late rounds. Just look at Brock Purdy, who was drafted with the last pick in the NFL Draft a couple of years ago.

It’s safe to say they landed another gem in 2019 with Greenlaw. He was a true difference-maker against the Packers last week.

Greenlaw’s Massive NFC Playoff Game

Dre Greenlaw didn’t have a single interception throughout the season. But he added two interceptions against the Packers. The second one ultimately sealed the game shut.

However, head coach Kyle Shanahan still has mixed emotions about Greenlaw’s play to run out the clock longer and risk a fumble.

Shanahan is breathing easier after Greenlaw didn’t turn the ball over. But he still acknowledged that he couldn’t believe Greenlaw didn’t get down right away.

Ultimately, Shanahan said he couldn’t get too upset because he loves Greenlaw and the other guys in the locker room. It seems like Greenlaw got the hint that he should’ve gotten down immediately after the interception.

The 49ers didn’t play the cleanest game against the Packers. Yet, they survived. Everything worked out, thanks to Greenlaw’s epic game.

Of course, Shanahan could deal without the extra drama. The move by Greenlaw wasn’t the brightest. However, there are many areas where the Niners need to improve before they face the Detroit Lions at home later this week.

Making Playoff History

Greenlaw earned the first two playoff interceptions of Jordan Love‘s career. Those two interceptions were also the first time a 49ers player registered two interceptions in a playoff game since Eric Davis in 1995 against the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game.

Per the 49ers, he’s also the first NFL linebacker to register two interceptions in a playoff game, and his eight tackles against the Packers have given him 62 tackles in his playoff career.

That’s the fifth-most tackles by a 49ers player in the playoffs in franchise history. But remember, his career is just getting started. He’s just 26 years old.

We’ll see what Greenlaw has in store for the NFC Championship Game against Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions’ potent offense.
