Even though the Cardinals were always (well, almost always) going to be considered as the home underdogs for this game, preseason NFL betting lookaheads projected Arizona at +2½. Last week’s projected NFL Week 16 line against the spread had the Cardinals similarly priced, albeit by half a point greater at +3.

Kliff Kingsbury is going into this game with a skeleton team, one that bears little to no resemblance to the roster he started the 2022 NFL season campaign with, or the one with which he hoped to build on Arizona’s playoff appearance last year.

Most notably, Kingsbury is scraping the quarterback barrel as he prepares to field third-stringer, Trace McSorley, a sixth-round NFL draft pick in 2019. This will be McSorley’s first-ever NFL start.

For McSorley, this is still going to be a unique opportunity to showcase his wares against the “indisputable” Goat [Brady], and a solid NFL team that only two years ago climbed the summit of the game by winning Super Bowl 55. The Buccaneers haven’t had the best of seasons. But the personnel is quality and the defense is sound. As such, they could give the whippersnapper and the Cards some headaches.

The question is whether the Cards as a whole will get up for this game. They are already eliminated from the playoff picture, and they’ve got little to play for save pride. By the NFL Stats 2022, there’s little to hang one’s hat on in terms of betting. Arizona is riding a four-game losing streak into Week 16, including three double-digit losses – by 28 points to San Francisco, by 14 points to New England and by 9 points to Denver.

This is a must-win game for Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. Yes, they’ve struggled in recent weeks, especially in back-to-back losses to the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals. But one has to consider the quality and talent of those opponents, their undeniable credentials as legitimate playoff contenders.
