Saints vs Patriots Expert Picks: How Low Can the Total Go?
Two Broke Offenses Walk Into a Stadium…
Patriots Slightly Favored as the Total is Set Under 40
Oh boy, we have possibly two of the worst offenses in the NFL meeting in Foxborough this Week 5. As such, the Saints vs Patriots Expert Picks have the second-lowest total of the week at just 39.5. New England, the host, is slightly favored at -1.5. But this one is a low-hanging fruit as far as betting is concerned. And we’re not getting fancy here: bet the total to go under.

These Patriots Have No Ammo
New England backers should have stayed away by now. Had these Patriots been tasked of actually defending Earth, we’d all be speaking alien by now. Fortunately, this team can just stink with no consequences other than burning betting slips. Bill Belichick also continues to live off his past achievements.
Had you swapped “Belichick” with another coach, the Patriots would not be -1.5 favorites on the NFL odds this week. This team is scoring the third-fewest points in the NFL. It has hit the 20-point mark just once in three games. Combined with a solid albeit unspecial defense, three of New England’s games have gone under the total this season.
Mac Jones has gotten worse than last season, with a measly 80.8 passer rating, which is 25th among 34 qualified quarterbacks. He’s also thrown two pick-sixes, which led to him being benched for Bailey Zappe. And the running game can’t get anything going, with an average of 3.4 yards a carry.
But the Saints may be just as bad on offense. That’s why the Saints vs Patriots Expert Picks still favor New England, even when all signs point to this team needing to get blown up. Both pundits and fans alike have lamented about the roster: these guys are not good enough.
“Yeah I think we have pretty good talent on offense,” Belichick said when asked about the roster following the team’s three-point outing against Dallas. “We just haven’t been able to find a good, consistent groove with it.”
Alrighty, sir. At this point, Belichick will have to spend as much time doing damage control PR over coaching, given this team’s current NFL standing.
Saints Have Their Own Carr Wreck Going
Last week, we made fun of the Raiders’ ineptitude on offense. That malodor has not worn off of their former quarterback, Derek Carr, as he’s now let New Orleans fans and bettors down. The four-time Pro Bowler has had an up-and-down season. He’s coming off a poor showing against Tampa, where NO got held off the endzone for a 26-9 loss.
As such, the Saints are now one of six NFL teams that have yet to cover the NFL spread. The team is just 0-3-1 against the spread (ATS) this season, and the subpar Carr-led offense is partly to blame. New Orleans is scoring just 15.5 points a game, which is even worse than last season: 19.4.
But this should have been expected. This is Carr’s first season with a new offensive coordinator in Pete Carmichael, and the team is missing its two main running backs. As such, folks who keep fading the totals with Saints games are still living it up. That pitiful showing against Tampa made it 10 straight games where the total went under for NO.
If we go back further, that’s also 13 of its last 14 games. And that includes three games under 40 points on the totals, including a miserly 32 against Cleveland. We don’t see the Saints vs Patriots Expert Picks trending differently.
