AS Saint-Etienne Stats & History

AS Saint-Etienne was established in 1919 by local grocery store workers. Saint-Etienne’s green kits come from the color of the Groupe Casino grocery store chain. In the 1920s, the club was referred to as Amical Sporting Club, and the current name was adopted in 1930.

Les Verts became professional in 1933, and started out in the second tier of French soccer. In 1938, they registered their first promotion to Ligue 1 in the Saint Etienne stats. In 1957, under Jean Snella, Saint-Etienne won their first league title but their peak came in the 1960s and 70s.

There were ups and downs to start the 60s, as the team struggled after Snella left. Saint-Etienne were relegated in 1962, but won their first Coupe de France trophy in the same season. After one season in the second tier, they returned to Ligue 1. Snella returned in 1963 and Saint-Etienne won their second league title in his first season back.

Snella won one more Ligue 1 title with Les Verts before departing for good in 1967. In Albert Batteux’s first season as manager, one of the most notable AS Saint-Etienne stats was achieved. They won the league and Coupe de France double in 1968 and 1970, winning four straight Ligue 1 titles from 1967-1970.

AS Saint-Etienne Team Records

After a few down years and a managerial change, Saint-Etienne managed to win two more doubles in 1974 and 1975. In 1976, Les Verts had their best-ever European campaign, reaching the final of the European Cup. However, they failed to score and fell to Bayern Munich. As a consolation, they won the league that year, and added a Coupe de France trophy in 1977.

Since winning Ligue 1 in 1981, Saint-Etienne have failed to win another major trophy. Former president Roger Rocher was convicted in 1982 amid a financial scandal, and Saint-Etienne was relegated in 1984. Over the next twenty years, Saint-Etienne spent time in both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

With a fifth place finish in 2008, Saint-Etienne qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in 26 years. They also won the Coupe de La Ligue in 2013. Despite being the most joint-successful club in Ligue 1 history, along with PSG, Les Verts were relegated in 2022.

With some of Saint-Etienne’s best players gone after relegation, their Ligue 1 odds to return may be slimmer. Betting advice and history may suggest Saint-Etienne won’t be playing in the second tier for too long, though.
