AEK Athens Stats & History
Early Years
Greek refugees from Constantinople following the Greco-Turkish war established AEK Athens in 1924. AEK’s grew in popularity during the 1920s but didn’t have an official stadium until 1930. In 1932, they won their first major title in the AEK Athens team stats, the Greek Cup.
AEK won their first league title in 1939 and also completed the domestic double that year. Under former player Kostas Negrepontis, AEK won the Greek Championship in 1940.
From 1958 to 1963, Kostas Nestoridis was the top goalscorer for five seasons a row. The club also signed attacker Mimis Papaioannou, who later became AEK’s all-time leading scorer. In 1963, they won their first championship in the AEK Athens team stats for 23 years. Papaioannou, known as “Mimis”, scored twice versus Panathinaikos in the 1963 playoff.
AEK had a successful period in the 1960s and won the Greek Cup in both 1964 and 1966. AEK also won the 1968 Greek championship. In the 1968-69 season, under Branko Stanković, AEK became the first Greek team to make the quarterfinals of the European Cup (now the UEFA Champions League). Then, AEK won their fifth league title in 1971.
European Semifinalists
In 1976-1977 season, AEK made more history. They became the first Greek team to qualify for the semifinals of the UEFA Cup. Juventus, who went on to win the competition, eliminated AEK. Thomas Mavros, who is the all-time leading scorer in the Greek top flight, was a key player that helped AEK win the 1977–78 domestic double.
Mavros also scored in the 1983 Greek Cup final as AEK defeated PAOK 2–0 in the Athens Olympic Stadium. AEK won their first league title for 10 years in 1989 and won the subsequent Greek Super Cup.
One of the most successful teams in the AEK team stats was the squad of the 90s. Captained by Stelios Manolas and coached by Dušan Bajević, AEK won three straight Greek titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994. AEK also won the only Greek League Cup, in 1990. That means they’re the only team to win every competition organized by the Hellenic Football Federation.
In 1994-95, AEK were the first Greek club to play in the UEFA Champions League group stage. In the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons, AEK reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
21st Century
AEK won their 12th Greek Cup title in 2000, under Giannis Pathiakakis. Two years later, they won the Greek Cup once again and progressed to the Champions League group stage. In a group with Real Madrid, Roma and Genk, AEK drew all of their matches but got knocked out of the competition.
Soon after, AEK suffered financial troubles but legend Demis Nikolaidis, along with a group of businessmen, bought the club. With a young side, AEK progressed to the group stage of the Champions League again in 2006-07. They managed to defeat AC Milan and Lille in the group stage and finished second in the Greek Super League.
In April 2011, AEK defeated Atromitos 3-0 and won the Greek Cup for the 14th time. AEK went through financial troubles once again and got relegated in 2013 for the first time ever. AEK were relegated from the Super League to the second-tier Football League for the first time in their history.
They decided to become an amateur club and start from scratch in the 2013-14 season and managed to earn promotion to the second tier. The following year won the 2014–15 Football League and earned promotion back to the Super League.
Under Stelios Manolas, AEK won the 2016 Greek Cup. Since then, they’ve added Super League titles in 2018 and 2023. In their first season at the Agia Sophia stadium, in 2023, they completed the league and cup double and progressed to the Europa League group stage.
However, bettors wanting to take AEK’s Europa League odds should be cautious as they haven’t made the quarterfinals for over 40 years. Betting advice suggests they could be Greek title contenders again in 2023-24 under head coach Matias Almeyda.
