Raków Częstochowa Team Stats & History
Raków Częstochowa was established as Sports club Racovia in 1921, in Raków village. The club quickly folded in 1925 due to lack of registration. In 1927, the Polish Socialist Party revived the club as Robotniczy Klub Sportowy or Workers Sports Club. In 1928, the Rakow became a district of the city of Częstochowa.
In 1937, the club earned promotion to class A. During World War II, the club didn’t operate, but they picked back up after the year. In 1955, Raków’s stadium, the Miejski Stadion Piłkarski “Raków”, opened up with a football pitch and a running track.
The club primarily played in the lower leagues during this time but they managed to play in the second division from 1962 to 1966. In 1967, they reached their first Polish Cup final in the Raków Częstochowa team stats. However, they lost 2-0 to Wisla Krakow. Five years later, got In 1972, Raków advanced to the semifinals of the Polish Cup but lost to Polish powerhouses Legia Warsaw.
In 1994, they earned their first ever promotion to the first division in the Raków team stats. In their first top flight spell, they managed to stay up for three seasons before getting relegated in their fourth. Their demise continued with further relegations in 2000 and 2001 as they fell down to the fourth tier. After a long wait, Raków Częstochowa finally returned to the second division, or I Liga, in 2016.
Recent Success
They won the I liga in 2019 and made a run to the semifinals of the Polish Cup, beating Lech Poznan and Legia Warsaw on the way. They returned to the top flight Ekstraklasa for the 2019-20 season and finished in 10th place.
In 2020-21, Raków Częstochowa managed to finish in second place, their highest-ever Ekstraklasa finish at the time. They won their first-ever major trophy in the Raków Częstochowa team stats, as they defeated Arka Gdynia in the 2011 Polish Cup final, 2-1. They went on to win the Polish Super Cup as well, when they defeated Legia Warsaw in penalties.
Their first appearance in European football followed and they made it to the playoff round of the UEFA Europa Conference League, where Raków lost to Gent. In May 2022, Raków beat Lech Poznań 3–1 to win back-to-back Polish Cups. Raków also won a second consecutive Super Cup with a 2–0 win over the same opponent.
In 2022-23, Raków once again progressed through to the playoff round of the Conference League by defeating FC Astana and Spartak Trnava. However, they lost 3-2 to Slavia Prague in the playoff.
On May 7th, 2023, Raków won the Ekstraklasa for the first time ever. They also made a run to the playoff round of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League by defeating Flora, Qarabag and Aris Limassol. Raków lost 2-1 to Copenhagen in the playoff round and will play in the Europa League group stage for the first time in 2023.
