Chicago Cubs vs Chicago White Sox Betting Odds Preview

The White Sox disappointing season continues at home against in-city rival Cubs

We start our Chicago Cubs (48-51) at Chicago White Sox (41-60) odds preview with a look at the opening betting line in the battle for Chicago. The Cubs send Kyle Hendricks (3-4, 3.38 era) to the hill against Michael Kopech (4-8, 4.29) for the White Sox. Oddsmakers have made the Cubs a -109 consensus road favorite in game one with a total of 9 (over -120). The first pitch is scheduled for 8:10 pm ET/5:10 pm PT. There are more attractive viewing options on the Tuesday baseball betting card, but if there’s an edge, we will take full advantage. We continue our Cubs vs White Sox preview by looking at both teams from a betting perspective.

Cubs In Limbo As Deadline Approaches

On June 8th, the Cubs fell to 10 games under .500 after losing their fourth consecutive game. The 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels pushed the Cubbies 7.5 games out of first place in the National League Central. Manager David Ross took massive unfair criticism, but his players still had his back, including Tuesday starter Kyle Hendricks.

Since, the Cubs are 22-15 and just 6.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the division lead, and 5 ½ games out of a wild card spot. This leaves GM Theo Epstein in a tight spot before the trade deadline with a team that would be better served preparing for a run next season by dealing either Marcus Stroman or Cody Bellinger, but that won’t sit well with the faithful who stare at the NL Central MLB standings that show their team has a chance in 2023. If we’re being realistic, MLB stats show that the Cubs are still not good enough to make the postseason with a pitching staff that is right in the middle of the league with a 4.12 era and a bullpen that has managed just 15 saves (29th).

For bettors, Ross’ team is 7-4 when Hendricks takes the ball, but the Dartmouth graduate has not had a win in over a month, leaving the public to rely on a bullpen that owns a 4.17 era (19th). Not exactly a comfortable feeling with money on the line. We shift our Cubs vs White Sox preview over to the boys on the Southsiders.

Even In AL Central, Sox Done In 2023

The Cubs may be in limbo with the upcoming deadline a week away, but the Chicago White certainly is not. The Sox will be sellers, with Lucas Giolito the likely target. Giolito is a pending free agent and will be a welcome addition to any staff that needs starting pitching depth.

The question is, will GM Rick Hahn go as far as trading Tim Anderson, who clearly would be happier in another uniform? As for Tuesday, Manager Pedro Grifol will send Kopech to the hill with his team, hoping to get out of a 3-8 run. Kopech has lost three of his last four decisions but is coming off one of his best performances of the season after giving up an earned run in 5 ⅔ innings in a 6-2 win against the New York Mets. Despite the win/loss record, Kopech’s numbers aren’t as bad as bettors would think. In 92 ⅓ innings, the Texas native has given up just 71 hits while striking out 102. The glaring problem is walks.

In his 18 starts, Kopech has allowed an average of 3.16 free passes per game, and that’s only in a little over five innings per start. In his last five appearances, his control seems to be getting worse. Kopech has allowed 4.8 walks in an average of 3 ½ innings per start over his last five. Many questions surround both teams, but we’re confident that there is an edge that we’re going to take full advantage of as we conclude our Cubs vs White Sox preview.

Sox Might Have Motivation On Their Side

Hear us out. If we’re a player on the Chicago White Sox our goal would be to play as well as possible to get out of the Windy City. They may not win the series, but we think Kopech pitched well enough in his last outing to get another shot with our money in game one. The ChiSox have been good at home with a 18-16 record in their previous 34. Against teams playing .485 ball or less, the Sox are 18-20 (-519 units) overall, but 10-7 at home. We conclude our Cubs vs White Sox preview by giving out the Chicago White Sox as our game-one selection. All the best this week with your MLB wagers.
