Benfica vs Porto

Date, time:

Head-to-Head

There are multiple opportunities to bet on Benfica vs Porto odds each season. This is the first of at least three of 2023-24, and last season these teams split their matches in O Clássico. However, Porto have gotten the better of Benfica in recent seasons, especially in cup competitions. Porto have lost just one of the last 11 meetings and have won the last four head-to-head matchups in cup competitions. They defeated Benfica 2-0 in the 2020 Supercup.

Benfica Coming Off Primeira Liga Win

S.L. Benfica won their first Primeira Liga title for four years in 2018-19. In the 34-game season, Benfica lost just three matches and conceded 20 goals. Key midfielder Enzo Fernandez left for Chelsea in the middle of last season, but Benfica still managed to become Portuguese champions. In the process, they also made the Champions League quarterfinal.

Here, the Supercopa Cândido de Oliveira odds price Benfica as favorites, but they’ve struggled vs. their rivals in recent seasons. Still, Benfica have a loaded roster and kept most of their players in the Summer. One significant departure was left back Alex Grimaldo, who signed for Bayer Leverkusen.

However, they managed to replace Grimaldo and some others. Benfica signed Czech left back David Jurasek from Slavia Prague and made some other exciting additions. Highly-rated Turkish midfielder Orkun Kokcu joined from Feyenoord and should add even more creativity to a lineup that includes Joao Mario and David Neres. Angel Di Maria departed Benfica for Real Madrid in 2010, but the World Cup winner is now back in Lisbon. He joins a forward line with Rafa Silva and Goncalo Ramos.

Porto Relatively Quiet in Transfer Market

While Benfica made some high-profile signings this Summer, Porto’s transfer strategy was more understated. They managed to strike a decent deal for Fran Navarro, who scored 17 goals for Gil Vicente last season. The Portuguese giants also brought in 21-year-old Nico Gonzalez from Barcelona. Navarro could be an invaluable asset, especially if striker Mehdi Taremi leaves the club this Summer.

Porto had an excellent season in 2022-23, even though they didn’t win the league. They defeated Braga 2-0 in the Taça de Portugal final and beat Sporting by the same scoreline in the Taça da Liga final. Regulars in the Champions League, Porto reached the round of 16, where they lost to Inter Milan.

Taremi, who was Porto’s leading scorer last season, is rumored to be wanted by Tottenham and AC Milan. He’s likely to be available for Wednesday’s match and scored 22 league goals and provided seven assists last season. The Iranian international was the Primeira Liga’s leading scorer. No other Porto player managed 10 or more league goals last season, but Evanilson and Galeno are other dangerous attackers.

Match Analysis & Odds

Although S.L. Benfica have only won one of their last 11 matches vs. Porto, they’re favored here. The Benfica vs Porto odds price Benfica as 0.5-goal favorites in this special edition of O Classico. Benfica show both +120 ATS and moneyline odds as they aim for a trophy to kick off their season. They dropped their final two preseason matches to Feyenoord and Burnley, though.

Porto, at +225 moneyline odds, are an interesting pick. They’ve scored in 11 of their last 12 games vs. Benfica and have won four of the previous five meetings. Porto are also the most successful team in the Portuguese Supercup, with 23 total wins. Heading into the match, Porto +0.5 comes in at -150 odds.

A draw is priced at +225 odds, but each of the last eight editions of the Supercup have finished with a winner in 90 minutes. Benfica to lift the trophy displays -155 odds, while Porto stand at +125 odds to win a 24th Supercup. Meanwhile, under 2.5 goals show -120 odds for Wednesday’s match.
