Unpredictable Coupe de France Nearly Underway
The Coupe de France takes the crown as the most unpredictable domestic cup competition in Europe’s top-five leagues. Lower-league teams have made the final in three of the last 12 years and the last two tournaments have had surprise winners. With the competition almost underway for the 2023-24 season, we’ll take a look at the latest odds to win the 2024 Coupe de France. The knockout-style competition starts with over 8,000 Coupe de France teams but only one can be crowned champion.
Favorites
Paris Saint-Germain are favorites to win the 2023-24 Coupe de France and have won in two of the last four seasons. The Parisians have been champions a record 14 times in the Coupe de France stats. Six of those wins have come in the last nine years and they show -150 odds to win the 2024 Coupe de France.
Paris Saint-Germain will be busy this year contending for Ligue 1 and the Champions League along with the Coupe de France. Last season, PSG lost to Marseille in the round of 16 and also lost at the same stage to Nice in 2021-22. PSG are in a transition phase, with Lionel Messi and Neymar gone.
They have the talent to bring home the title, especially with Kylian Mbappe back in the fold. However, a lot depends on scheduling and the luck of the draw. Still, the Parisians have an implied 60 percent chance of winning their first Coupe de France in three years.
Contenders
Marseille’s 2022-23 Coupe de France ended in an embarrassing defeat in penalties to second-tier FC Annecy in the quarterfinals. OM has retooled this Summer, with signings like Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, Renan Lodi, Geoffrey Kondogbia, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. They come in at +900 odds to win this season’s Coupe de France but haven’t won since 1989.
Lille is next on the odds board, at +1100 odds to win the 2024 Coupe de France. They lost in penalties to Lyon in last season’s round of 16 and were the last Coupe de France champions in 2011. If star striker Jonathan David stays at Lille through the transfer window, they’ll certainly have a chance.
Lens was one of Ligue 1’s surprise teams last season and managed to finish in second place and qualify for the Champions League. However, they’ve never won the Coupe de France but have qualified for the final on three occasions. Franck Haise’s squad display +1200 odds to win the Coupe de France.
AS Monaco has kicked off the Ligue 1 season with two wins in two matches and is looking dangerous. They’re also close to sealing a deal for Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun and show +1200 Coupe de France futures odds. However, they lost in the round of 64 on the Coupe de France schedule last season to second-tier Rodez.
Intriguing Longshots
Rennes, at +2000 odds, is an interesting choice. They last won the Coupe de France in 2019 and have been one of the best-attacking teams in French soccer over the last few years.
Nice, despite having a good deal of talent, has lacked consistency over the last few seasons. They finished in ninth place in Ligue 1 in 2022-23 and were eliminated in the Coupe de France in the round of 64. They are priced at +2800 Coupe de France odds.
Defending champions Toulouse shocked the footballing world by winning their first-ever major trophy last season. They’re +4000 long shots to repeat, though.
Meanwhile, Nantes have reached the final in consecutive seasons, losing 5-1 to Toulouse in the final in 2022 and beating Nice 1-0 in 2022. They come in at +5000 odds to win a second title in three years.
Only five teams have won multiple Coupe de France titles in the 21st century: Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon, Nantes, and second-tier clubs Auxerre and Guingamp. Auxerre is +8000 long shots, while Guingamp shows +20000 odds. Guingamp is also the only team ever to win the Coupe de France while playing in Ligue 2.
