Sophomore From California Has Stepped in For Former Starter For Arizona Wildcats
Arizona may not be headed to the Pac-12 title game, but it was still a memorable end to the regular season with the Arizona quarterback having more passing yards than he had coming into the season when looking at the Noah Fifita career stats.
The sophomore from Huntington Beach, CA lit up rival Arizona State for 527 yards in a 59-23 win as he earned Player of the Week honors.
When looking at the college football odds, Arizona came into the season tied for eighth in the odds of winning the Pac-12 title and the Wildcats finished third in the 2023 Pac-12 standings.
Arizona remained 15th in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. The Wildcats moved up from 16th to 14th in the Associated Press rankings and went from 16th to 15th in the American Football Coaches Association poll.
Opportunity Knocks for Fifita
Coming into the season, Jayden de Laura was the starting quarterback after throwing for 3685 yards with 25 touchdown passes.
When looking at the Noah Fifita career stats, Fifita attempted a total of eight passes in the first four games of the season.
His first start came against a Washington team that would finish undefeated in the regular season.
Fifita was put in more of a game-management role as he averaged a season-low 5.9 yards per attempt.
Arizona lost by seven points to Washington and by two points to Southern California despite Fifita throwing five touchdown passes in that game.
The Wildcats would win the final six games of the regular season. Fifita would complete 73.7% of his passes for 1911 yards in those six games. He had 15 touchdown passes and only three interceptions.
When looking at the Noah Fifita career stats, he has completed 73.6% of his passes with 2515 yards with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions.
When looking at the CFB stats, Fifita is third in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency among Pac-12 players behind Oregon’s Bo Nix, the current front-runner in the Heisman Trophy odds and USC’s Caleb Williams, last year’s Heisman winner.

Washington State’s Connor Halliday owns four of the top 10 performances including 734 against California in 2014.
Eight of the performances ahead of Fifita’s big game were by Washington State players when the Cougars ran the “Air Raid” offense under the late Mike Leach.
Fifita topped Anu Solomon’s program record of 520 yards against California in 2014.
Current Detroit Lions starting quarterback Jared Goff is among the Pac-12 players with 500-yard passing games.
The highest passing yardage total by a Pac-12 NCAAF player this season was the 510 yards by Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders in a season-opening win over TCU before Fifita went to work against the Sun Devils.
The most in a Pac-12 game came when Washington State’s Cameron Ward passed for 438 yards against Oregon.
How He Got Here
Fifita was the No. 40 rated quarterback in the Class of 2022 according to the 247sports.com recruiting database. Penn State’s Drew Allar and Clemson’s Cade Klubnik were the top-rated quarterbacks in the class. Fifita was listed as 5-foot-10 and didn’t offer much of a running threat and that played a role in where he landed in the recruiting rankings.
New Mexico and Hawaii were the first Division I NCAAF teams to offer Fifita a scholarship with California the first Pac-12 team to offer Fifita a scholarship.
Four months later, Arizona offered Fifita a scholarship. He committed to Arizona on April 4, 2021.
Fifita made his Arizona debut in a 39-17 loss to Mississippi State as he was 4-for-8 with 56 yards. His first touchdown pass came in a 2022 loss to Utah.
Fifita has completed more than 70% of his passes in six of the next seven NCAA football game.
What’s Next?
Washington is currently third in the College Football Playoff rankings behind Georgia and Michigan. The feeling is the winner of the Pac-12 championship game will secure one of the four CFP spots.
With nine wins, Arizona should be a prime bowl slot as well as the Wildcats will play in a bowl game for the first time since the 2017 season when Arizona lost to Purdue 38-35 in the Foster Farms Bowl in Santa Clara, California.
Arizona came into the season priced at -110 according to the NCAAF betting lines to go over five regular-season wins. The Wildcats surpassed that mark in a Nov. 4 win over UCLA as he threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns.
