Carolina Panthers 2023 Future Odds

How Far Can Bryce Young Take Panthers?

Bryce Young looks to lead the Carolina Panthers’ renaissance this 2023. That is a lot of pressure for the diminutive quarterback. But it’s expected for the first overall pick and the man Carolina traded a treasure chest for in the 2023 NFL Draft. Carolina then signed plenty of notable free agents and got a more experienced coaching staff. However, the 2023 Carolina Panthers stats and odds show minuscule improvements.

Panthers Expected to Improve With Young but Not by Much

Given the Carolina Panthers’ current outright odds, fans should keep expectations low. But it’s hard not to get excited as Carolina could, at least, be more functional as an offense. Young will stabilize the quarterback position while Frank Reich is a more competent head coach than Matt Rhule. On top of that, the defense is still young and growing.

Carolina has not had a winning season since 2017. The team won seven games last season and went over its regular-season win totals of 6.5. That’s the first time it did in the last five seasons. Steve Wilks did admirably in his 12-game stint as the interim coach as the Panthers went 6-6 and nearly made the playoffs.

Of course, the team had Sam Darnold as its quarterback. And while he performed above expectations, he unraveled when the games were on the line.

The Panthers blew it up and traded a fortune to take its new franchise quarterback in Young. Even at just 5’10” and just over 200 pounds, Young’s talent led to him winning the 2021 Heisman Trophy with Alabama. He should lead the 2023 Carolina Panthers stats. But whether it translates to a better record or not, is up for debate.

Right now, the public is still undecided on how good Carolina can be. Its outright odds have not moved much since opening prior to drafting Young. But with an easy schedule in a very winnable division, these lines may quickly shift when Carolina builds momentum.

Super Bowl Odds: History in the Making?

The odds are stacked against Bryce Young leading the Panthers to a Super Bowl win. No rookie quarterback has ever achieved this feat. Kurt Warner and Tom Brady were both in their sophomore seasons and played behind two dynasties. The Panthers are not quite on that level and the unmoved Super Bowl odds of 80-1 attest to that.

Conference Odds: New Kids on The Block

Depending on how good Young can get, the Panthers are the hot new contender to watch out for. Carolina already had a fearsome defense for the past two seasons. But inept quarterback play and coaching quickly took the wind out of its sails.

If Young and the offense can pick up the slack, Carolina can contend and surprise even the NFC’s powerhouses. But at 33-1, Carolina is not expected to make a deep playoff run if they even get to the playoffs.

Division Odds: On the Prowl

This is part of Carolina’s outright odds that’s worth a look per NFL betting odds. At +350, Carolina is behind New Orleans and Atlanta to win the NFC South title. And it’s not by much as all three teams finished with identical records (7-10) in 2022. All three also got aggressive in the offseason and made significant improvements.

But a case can be made that Young will be the division’s best quarterback. His top competition is New Orleans’s Derek Carr, who is new to the team. But he has a 63-79 record and a 91.8 passer rating in his career. And Carolina’s defense can be just as good as New Orleans. Finishing atop the NFL division standings is plausible.

Regular Season Wins: A Soft Landing for Young

The Panthers could not have asked for a more convenient NFL schedule to ease their young quarterback in. The team has one of the easiest schedules with 11 of its opponents having losing records in 2022. In fact, only two of its opponents, Minnesota and Dallas, had more than nine wins. And Minnesota had a negative point differential.

Whether Carolina gets more than 7.5 wins will most likely depend on how it fares against its division. Carolina went 4-2 against the NFC South last year with three different quarterbacks. Young has a much higher upside and can light up the NFL. Thus, it may be a sharp bet to take the ‘over’ on Carolina’s wins before the market notices.

To Make Playoffs: Another Sharp Bet?

If folks are going to take Carolina to go over 7.5 wins, going a step further and betting it to make the playoffs at +200 is not a bad gamble. The Panthers don’t even have to win the division if it can win nine or 10 games. And judging by its beatable schedule, Carolina should be able to.

Carolina also plays most of its home games in the latter half of its schedule. This is around the time Young and the team start to acclimate to Reich’s new offensive schemes. So even if the team starts off slow, staying faithful to the team’s potential could yield big rewards.

Side Bets: The Young-Reich Combo Could Prosper

While Reich’s final seasons in Indianapolis were mired with dysfunction, it wasn’t his fault. He is still an offensive genius who helped Philadelphia put up 41 points on Bill Belichick’s Patriots in the Super Bowl. And his first two seasons with Indianapolis saw the team rank in the top 10 in scoring.

With Young, Reich finally gets a quarterback he can mold to his liking. Young is also the most talented of the many he’s coached. Both could just take the NFL by storm and put up prolific 2023 Carolina Panthers stats. If it translates to wins, bet on Young (+450) and/or Reich (+1800) to win Offensive Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively.
