2023 Seattle Seahawks Stats: Key Numbers and Insights

Seahawks Ready to Build on Surprising 2022 Season

Will the Seattle Seahawks have more surprises for 2023? Pete Carroll’s team was expected to be terrible following the blockbuster that dealt star quarterback Russell Wilson away. Instead, Seattle won nine games and made the playoffs while Geno Smith won the Comeback Player of the Year Award with his resurgent play. Now, the 2023 Seattle Seahawks stats are boosted and expectations are higher.

Seahawks Could be Even Better For 2023

Expectations were minimal for Seattle in 2022. The preseason regular-season win totals were set at 5.5 and many folks even bet on the ‘under’. Instead, Seattle won nine games on the strength of its offense. The Seahawks scored the ninth-most points in the NFL as Smith led the NFL with a 69.8% completion.

Seattle started strong and won six of its first nine games. But as was the case in the past few seasons, the team faded and just eked its way into a Wild Card spot. The Seahawks averaged just 17.8 points in its final five games with Smith’s passer rating dropping to just 83.9.

The defense was also subpar at best. The unit ranked 25th in scoring and gave up 400+ total yards six times. Even against Wilson’s dysfunctional Broncos, the Seahawks’ defense gave up 433 yards.

To make up for its shortcomings, Seattle invested heavily on its defense during the offseason. The team signed several veterans including bringing back middle linebacker Bobby Wagner. During the NFL Draft, Seattle also used two of its top three picks to take a defender.

But general manager John Schneider didn’t neglect the offense. He re-signed Smith, bolstered the offensive line, and added a topnotch receiver through the draft in Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

With all these moves, Seattle’s outright odds shortened considerably. Seattle should not only contend but may have one of the best NFL team records even with its more difficult 2023 NFL schedule.

Super Bowl Odds: From Pretender to Contender

The 2023 Seattle Seahawks stats could take a leap if this team’s offseason additions can deliver, especially on defense. But to consider the Seahawks as Super Bowl contenders? It’s not the craziest bet at 35-1, which is a sharp drop from 66-1. At their odds, the Seahawks have better chances than Minnesota and New England.

Conference Odds: The Third-Best Team?

The NFC is not as gruelling of a division as the AFC in terms of its Super Bowl contenders. Philadelphia and San Francisco are a class above everyone. But the Seahawks have a realistic chance at being the team just behind these two powerhouses.

At 14-1, Seattle is tied with New Orleans as the fifth-most likely NFC winner. And a case can be made that Seattle is better than Dallas and Detroit who are third and fourth on the odds board.

Division Odds: Chasing San Francisco

The Seahawks thumped all over Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers when he first became head coach of San Francisco. Seattle won eight of its first 10 meetings. But last season, San Francisco owned Seattle and beat them all three times with a margin of 43 points. If Seattle is to come out on top of the division at +200, it will have to find a way to beat San Fran.

Carroll still has the best winning percentage against the NFC West since he re-joined the NFL in 2010. He’s won three of every five games against the division and has five division titles. With the decline of Los Angeles and Arizona, Seattle should face San Francisco to get to the top of the NFL division standings.

Regular Season Wins: Plenty of Ups and Downs

If the past two seasons are anything to go by, the 2023 Seattle Seahawks stats could be divided into two halves. The first half could see Seattle start strong with home games against beatable teams like Carolina and Arizona. But the second half will be tough and has a four-game stretch against San Francisco (twice), Dallas, and Philadelphia.

This is where we’ll learn if Seattle is a true contender. But as the consensus states, going over 8.5 wins doesn’t need to include beating the elite teams. Seattle plays Arizona and L.A. twice as well as Tennessee and Carolina. It needs to win these games to replicate last season’s results.

To Make Playoffs: A 50/50 Shot?

The public is slightly bullish on Seattle’s playoffs. Its betting line has moved from ‘no’ being favored to a pick’em on both sides. Winning nine games may give Seattle just enough to sneak in like last NFL season. Or it could lose the tiebreaker and miss out this time. There are plenty of uncertainties.

The team also got a lot better via the offseason. The defense could improve and be a decent unit while the offense should be top five again. But the schedule is also a bit harder. So even if Seattle is better, on paper, the results may not be as fruitful as in 2022.

Side Bets: Could Carroll Be Due?

Pete Carroll is building a Hall of Fame career as a head coach in Seattle. He has a 61.2% winning percentage with the team and has only had one losing season in the last 11 years. On top of that, he’s made two Super Bowl trips, won one, and has five division titles. And yet he’s never won the Coach of the Year award.

The 71-year-old deserved it last season and could be “due” to win it this year if Seattle can make that leap and win 11+ games. It’s improbable, but at 30-1 in the sportsbook, there are worse bets out there.
