Betting Trends

The Miami Dolphins are 6-4 against the spread, including 2-3 away from home. The total has gone Under in four of the Dolphins’ last six games. Meanwhile, the New York Jets are 4-5-1 ATS, including 3-2 at home. The total has gone Under in the Jets’ last five games and seven times overall. That’s important to remember when assessing the Dolphins vs Jets betting lines.

Boyle In, Wilson Out

With Aaron Rodgers still on the mend following surgery on his torn Achilles, the New York Jets are making another change at quarterback. Tim Boyle is starting Friday in place of Zach Wilson, the former No. 2 overall pick who’s been largely ineffective with New York. In 10 games this football season, Wilson’s averaged only 6.1 yards per attempt with more interceptions (7) than touchdowns (6). He’s also been sacked 38 times, second-most in the NFL behind Washington’s Sam Howell (51).

In last week’s 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Wilson completed 7 of 15 passes for a season-low 81 yards, one touchdown and one interception before being benched late in the third quarter. The Jets, 8.5-point underdogs, dropped to 4-6 as their playoff hopes took another hit in the AFC.

Boyle didn’t fare much better in place of Wilson, throwing for 33 yards and an interception. Friday will be Boyle’s first extended work since 2021, in which he started three games for the Detroit Lions. Boyle went 0-3 in those games and finished the season with just three touchdowns and six interceptions on 64.9% passing. The Jets are his fourth NFL team in five seasons since going undrafted in 2019.

The 29-year-old Boyle’s tasked with improving an offense that’s been among the NFL’s worst. The Jets rank 29th in both scoring (15 PPG) and average yards (270.3). Losers of three straight, they haven’t hit 20 points since beating the Philadelphia Eagles 20-14 in Week 6.

Oddsmakers have reacted accordingly, dropping the Jets’ odds of making the playoffs to +800. They’re now +3000 to win the AFC East. Keep that in mind when analyzing the Dolphins vs Jets betting lines.

Miami Maintains First Place

The Miami Dolphins got back on track in Week 11, returning from their bye to beat the Las Vegas Raiders 20-13. A 14-point favorite, Miami overcame three turnovers to maintain its lead atop the AFC East.

Miami is now 7-3, tied with two teams for the second-best record in the AFC. Oddsmakers are bullish on the Dolphins, pricing them -550 to win the division and +400 to win the conference.

The Dolphins continue to operate with peak efficiency on offense. They still rank first in both scoring (30.5 PPG) and yards per game (434) despite slowing down following torrid start. Tua Tagovailoa is third in the NFL in passing yards (2,934), while Tyreek Hill remains the NFL receiving leader (1,222).

Miami’s managed to maintain its success in spite of injuries. Rookie running back Devon Achane has been limited in practice after leaving last week’s game with a knee injury. Achane, who’d just returned from injured reserve, has 39 carries for 461 yards and five touchdowns. He’s averaging a whopping 11.8 yards per carry and is tied for the NFL lead with six 20-plus yard rushing plays.

Handicapping the Game

The Jets are reeling, and Rodgers won’t be healed soon enough to save them. Wilson wasn’t the answer, and Boyle likely won’t be either. His limited work in the NFL is underwhelming.

This spread has already climbed from 7.5 to 10 since Sunday. It’s not enough. The Jets are sorely overmatched.

Their defense has done well to keep them in games, but the offense’s lack of production has begun to take a more significant toll. We saw that against Buffalo. Look for the Dolphins — 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games against the Jets — to cruise on the road.
