The New England Patriots are 2-8 against the spread, including 1-3 on the road. The Patriots’ 20% cover rate is tied for the second lowest in the NFL. The total has gone Under in seven of the Patriots’ 10 games. Conversely, the New York Giants are 3-7-1 ATS, including 1-2-1 at home. The total has gone Under in seven of the Giants’ last 10 NFL games. That’s important to remember when assessing the Patriots vs Giants NFL lines.

New York Free Fall

The New York Giants ended their three-game losing skid in Week 11, beating the Washington Commanders 31-19. The Giants opened as 10-point underdogs but saw the line turn more in their favor before closing at +7.5. Tommy DeVito threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns, two to running back Saquon Barkley, to spur the upset. DeVito was subsequently named NFL Rookie of the Week.

The 31 points matched the Giants’ biggest scoring output on the 2023 NFL season schedule since a Week 2 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. They still rank last in the NFL in both yards per game (262.2) and scoring (13.5 PPG).

With Daniel Jones out for the season following ACL surgery, DeVito, an undrafted rookie out of Illinois, and veteran Tyrod Taylor will handle quarterback duties for the foreseeable future. The Giants are also without many other starters due to injuries, including tight end Darren Waller (tight end) and receiver Darius Slayton (arm). On top of that, All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (hamstring) has missed multiple practices this week and is questionable for Sunday.

Regardless of their statuses, the Giants are headed toward a lost season. They’re 3-8 and have the worst point differential in the NFL (minus-136). Keep that in mind when analyzing the Patriots vs Giants NFL lines.

Keep Fading New England

The Week 11 bye came at an opportune time for the New England Patriots, who are reeling after a 2-8 start. The Patriots have lost three straight, including a 10-6 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany.

While Mac Jones is expected to start against New York, his hold on the Patriots’ quarterback job is tenuous at best. Jones, who is near the NFL lead in interceptions with 10, was benched in his last game and replaced by Bailey Zappe. The Patriots rank 26th in yards per game (294.5) and 31st in scoring (14.1 PPG). They’ve topped 20 points just once this season: a 29-25 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Week 7.

Like New York, New England has dealt with a rash of injuries. Linebacker Matthew Judon (biceps) and rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez (shoulder) are both out for the season, dealing a crippling blow to the Patriots’ makeshift defense. Leading receiver Kendrick Bourne, the team’s leading receiver, is also out (torn ACL).

Holding the worst record in the AFC, the Patriots can rule out a surprise NFL playoff run. A top-five pick in the 2024 draft is in their future.

Handicapping the Game

The Giants have been one of the least profitable teams for bettors this season. Their 3-7-1 record ATS (30%) is fifth-worst in the NFL. Still, this spread is a bit puzzling.

Oddsmakers seem to be giving the Patriots a bit too much respect. This is the first time since Nov. 5 and only the fourth time this season they’ve been favored. They covered the spread in just one of the previous three instances.

New York has struggled mightily. However, getting the hook here at +3.5 should interest bettors. Be sure to keep an eye on any NFL odds movement.
