About 30 seconds after the Kansas City Chiefs put the finishing touches on their third Super Bowl in five years and fourth overall, sportsbooks slapped up odds on Super Bowl LIX from New Orleans. The teams who just competed for the Lombardi are almost always at the top of the NFL odds list with this year being no exception.
Kansas City and San Francisco are co-favorites at +600 with the Baltimore Ravens occupying the third spot at +900. If we’ve learned anything from this season, it’s that you don’t have to be the best in the league at a particular area to find success. Kansas City didn’t lead the league in any category, yet here they are with a ring. Let’s examine a few teams that could be worth an early Super Bowl LIX odds investment.
Baltimore Ravens (2024 Odds +900, 3rd Choice)
There are some, including us, that still think the Baltimore Ravens are the best team in football, but they weren’t when it mattered after dropping a 17-10 decision to the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a day where the Ravens offensive line was on the hook for four sacks allowed while Lamar Jackson couldn’t get the ball downfield for most of the day, leaving M&T Stadium completing just 54% of his passes with a touchdown and an interception.
We do know it’s important to have a veteran coach who can navigate the potholes of a season the way Andy Reid did this past year. It’s been a second (2012) but John Harbaugh already has a ring and plenty of postseason experience, bringing Baltimore to the championship game on three other occasions. Harbaugh will have Jackson, who is 58-19 in the regular season, back for his seventh season which was his best year statistically.
For bettors, this was the best year ATS (12-7) for the Ravens since the 2020 season when they finished 11-7 ATS. There are plenty of holes to fill starting defensive coordinator after Mike Macdonald was hired as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.
Defensive back coach Dennard Wilson is now the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver accepted a lateral move with the Miami Dolphins. We’ll know more as the season approaches but right now the Ravens will be right in the mix and worth an early Super Bowl LIX odds wager.
Buffalo Bills (2024 Odds +1100, 4th Choice)
If the Buffalo Bills don’t win a Super Bowl with Josh Allen, it will be one of the biggest disappointments in decades. We hear you Cowboys fans, but Tony Romo is not in this category.
Head Coach Sean McDermott can’t match resumes’ with Andy Reid but McDermott does have six playoff appearances in seven seasons, including the 2020 season when they lost to the Chiefs after Patrick Mahomes generated a last-second comeback to break the hearts of Western New York.
Championships are not only built around quarterbacks, they are also won with a tenacious defense and the Buffalo Bills are as good as anyone after finishing in the top 10 in various defensive categories.
Buffalo’s defense was ranked #1 in percentage of offensive drives that ended in a turnover and second in passing touchdowns allowed. Bills bettors hope to finally get a return from their support after finishing 8-11 ATS this past season, adding to a disappointing 2-year total of 15-21-1.
It was the first time since the 2011-2013 seasons that the Bills finished in the red for two straight years. The Bills are planning on raising season ticket prices for the upcoming season which means expectations to be on the right side of most NFL scores and odds will be through the roof.
Dallas Cowboys (2024 odds +1600, 7th Choice)
Jerry Jones said that this is the year that his team will go “all-in”. That’s great to hear if you’re a Dallas Cowboys fan even if it makes you wonder if the team wasn’t all-in for the last 28 years but we do know that Jerry wants to win as bad as any owner in the NFL.
We know that Mike McCarthy will be back for his fifth season in Dallas and with Bill Belichick still on the market, we can definitely see a scenario of win or else for McCarthy.
We know a couple of things, first the Cowboys will lean on Dak Prescott for one more season the Boys will have a new/old defensive coordinator when Mike Zimmer was hired to fill the spot left by Dan Quinn who is now the head coach for the Washington Commanders. What Dallas really needs is to get nasty on defense.
The Boy finished 5th in total defense but never did we think this is a defense that can lift up the offense after a turnover. They were the 26th-ranked defense in the percentage of offensive drives that resulted in a score.
That number has to change to be a top Super Bowl pick for next year, but it’s the Cowboys and the season just seems more fun when they have high expectations. Perhaps go “all-in” with an early Super Bowl LIX future odds wager.
