Head-to-Head
The European Cup final in 1960 is the only previous meeting. That match set an attendance record for a European Cup final, as over 127,000 people were at the match in Glasgow. Two Real Madrid players scored hat tricks in the 7-3 victory. Ferenc Puskas put four past Frankfurt, while Alfredo di Stefano added three goals of his own.
Real Victorious in Four of Last Five Super Cup Appearances
- Last Match: N/A, First Match of 2022-23 Season
- Injuries and Suspensions: None Reported
Real Madrid has won the UEFA Champions League five times in the last nine seasons. So, this will also be their fifth appearance in the UEFA Super Cup during that time. They’ve typically done well in this match and have been victorious in four of their last five appearances.
Notably, Los Blancos lost to rivals Atletico Madrid in extra time in their last appearance, in 2018. So, they haven’t lost in normal time in the UEFA Super Cup since 1998. So, it comes as no surprise that Los Blancos are one-goal favorites in Real Madrid vs Frankfurt.
A lot about Real Madrid from last season is the same. They head into the 2022-23 season with the same coach, Carlo Ancelotti, and many of the same players. In their final preseason match, vs. Juventus, Ancelotti started the same 11 players that defeated Liverpool 1-0 in May’s UCL final. Real came away with a 2-0 win vs. Juventus, but are yet to play in a competitive match this season.
Two notable additions to Real Madrid’s squad in the offseason were midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni and center-back Antonio Rudiger. They should add critical depth and could play a role in Wednesday’s match; however, Real Madrid’s starting midfield trio of Casemiro, Toni Kroos, and Luka Modric remains the same. Karim Benzema, the likely Ballon D’or winner and Vinicius Jr. will pose threats to Eintracht Frankfurt’s defense up top.
The Super Cup final odds reflect the fact that Real Madrid has scored two or more goals in their last five appearances in this match. Bettors are hammering the over on their 1½ goals total, currently priced at -175.
Eintracht Frankfurt off to Nightmare Bundesliga Start
- Last Match: 6-1 L vs. Bayern Munich
- Injuries and Suspensions: D Jerome Onguene (Out)
Just 45 minutes into the 2022-23 Bundesliga season, Eintracht Frankfurt was five goals down vs. Bayern Munich. It’s certainly not the start that Frankfurt wanted to get off to, in what will be a long season. Especially since they’re making their first appearance in the Champions League/European Cup since the 1959-60 season.
Frankfurt will aim to put the 6-1 loss to Bayern Munich behind them on Wednesday and go for more European silverware. The Super Cup final odds seem to doubt their chances but they are priced at -160 to score a goal.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s 2021-22 Europa League run was highly improbable, so they’re no stranger to beating the odds. They knocked off Real Betis, Barcelona, and West Ham United en route to the final. The match vs. Rangers finished 1-1 but Frankfurt was victorious on penalties.
Some good news from Frankfurt’s blowout loss last Friday was Randal Kolo Muani’s debut. The former Nantes forward scored Eintracht Frankfurt’s only goal vs. Bayern and could provide much-needed forward depth. After Andre Silva scored 28 goals in the 2020-21 season and departed for Leipzig, Frankfurt struggled for goals last year.
No Eintracht player managed more than eight Bundesliga goals and Real Madrid won’t be too worried about offensive threats. Filip Kostic is an underrated creator from the left wing, though.
Odds & Preview
Most Real Madrid vs Eintracht Frankfurt predictions are taking the Spanish champions to win the match. Real are priced at -225 to win in 90 minutes and -400 to win the Super Cup. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt is +625 longshots to win in 90 minutes and sit at +300 odds to lift the cup. A draw is listed at +350 odds.
As things currently stand, Real Madrid is implied to be more likely to cover the one-goal spread. Real Madrid -1 shows current odds of -135 but this isn’t necessarily expected to be a high-scoring contest.
The O/U stands at 3 goals but under 3 sits at -135 odds as well. Both teams are well versed in absorbing pressure from their opponents and counterattacking; however, Frankfurt will be playing another team of Bayern Munich’s caliber on Wednesday. It remains to be seen whether Oliver Glasner’s back line will be more organized.
Regardless, this should be an intriguing match and it officially kicks off the European schedule for 2022-23. Should Real Madrid win, it’d be their fourth trophy in the last year alone. Meanwhile, this is uncharted territory for Frankfurt.
