Why are UFC Events Cancelled?

The Growing Trend Continues

There have been a lot of UFC events cancelled in 2023, but why has this become a growing trend?

Every week the UFC schedule is forced to change with fighters pulling, which is only one of the many reasons.
UFC odds are constantly changing because of this, so we’re hoping to see more stability in the MMA world over the coming months.

Injuries

The sad reality of the fight business is that injuries happen. Whether it’s in training camp or a pre-existing injury, they’re common.

The annoying thing is that these injuries aren’t always disclosed to officials, and fighters agree to fights knowing they need to recover in time.

If they don’t recover in time, it usually results in a late withdrawal, giving the UFC no time to find a replacement fighter.

There have been 12 main events cancelled in 2023 alone. That’s a scary number for a company that thrives on the main event being the star attraction, and it’s also odd that so many big fights are going to the wayside.
Most fighters would do anything to fight in the main event, so we could see a case of the money not being worth it.

Seeing UFC events cancelled is frustrating for the sport and for bettors, who have done the research, only to find the fight has changed.

No Replacement

Some fighters simply don’t want to fight a specific opponent. Many Russian fighters have scared off the opposition, so finding a late replacement isn’t easy.

Someone is usually willing to put their life on the line in an obvious mismatch, but these fighters aren’t often good enough to feature on the top billing.

If it’s a UFC main event fight, you don’t want someone like Conor McGregor facing a journeyman, as it wouldn’t attract any attention. Therefore, instead of the fight going ahead, it’s cancelled, and the co-main event becomes the main.

People were excited to see Daniel Santos vs Johnny Munhoz at UFC 288 earlier this year before Santos had to pull out, which added to the UFC events cancelled list.

“I arrived well, 100 percent ready to take the weight off. During training and the weight loss process, an abscess came out on my leg. Due to the pain and the degree of inflammation, the UFC medical team made me rehydrate to start with antibiotics to treat the infection and allergy,” Santos said.

It’s unfortunate, and there is little the UFC can do except update the UFC results with a cancelled fight.
