UFC 289: Reigning Queen Nunes Calls It Quits After Thrashing Aldana

At the pinnacle of her career, Amanda Nunes retired right then and there, without so much as a heads-up.

Spectacular performance! Spectacular victory! But also, spectacular retirement! The UFC world witnessed the end of an era at UFC 289 last night as Brazilian powerhouse, Amanda Nunes, claimed an immaculate win over Mexico’s Irene Aldana before pulling a shocker at the end. At the pinnacle of her career, Amanda Nunes retired right then and there, without so much as a heads-up.

Fight Kicked Off With Near-Perfect Skills

An electrifying showdown unfolded at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena, with Nunes delivering a masterclass, a near-perfect performance, against Mexican contender Irene Aldana. Reigning as the UFC women’s featherweight and bantamweight champion, Nunes commanded every minute of the fight, leading to a unanimous decision with 50-44 scores twice and a 50-43.

The champion definitely outclassed Aldana, displaying her exceptional combat skills. Aldana put up a brave fight, but it was clear that Nunes was in a league of her own.

Nunes Pulls a Shocker Right After Victory

But the night held an even bigger shock. At the height of her success, Nunes stunned the crowd by announcing her retirement. She laid her championship belts and gloves in the Octagon center, kissed them, and bowed out while still on top. She celebrated her triumph and farewell in the traditional MMA way.

The indomitable Nunes marked the end of an extraordinary chapter in the history of the sport. The Lioness reigned supreme in the Octagon one last time, retiring as the reigning women’s bantamweight and featherweight champion.

Streak of Victories

Her retirement follows a wild and remarkable streak of victories over seven women who have held a UFC belt, including Valentina Shevchenko, Cris “Cyborg” Justino (snapping Justino’s 14-year unbeaten streak), Julianna Peña, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Germaine de Randamie, and Holly Holm.

Nunes leaves behind a legacy as the greatest female MMA fighter of all time. She not only dominated the women’s division but also etched her name in the pantheon of the greatest fighters in UFC history. As the dust settles on her illustrious career, it’s evident that it will be a long time before we see anyone in her class again.
