Kyle Bradish Stats: Young Righty Taking Step Forward for Resurgent Orioles

Bradish Part of Solution for AL Leading Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles took another step forward Sunday, completing a three-game sweep of the New York Mets at Camden Yards to bolster their record to an American League-best 70-42. Cionel Perez and three other relievers combined to throw 4.1 spotless innings out of the bullpen, bailing out right-hander Kyle Bradish.

Bradish allowed three hits and five walks over 4.2 innings, tossing only 45 of 87 pitches for strikes. It marked just the first time in his last 13 starts that Bradish walked more than two batters. He will look to bounce back in his next start, likely next weekend against the Seattle Mariners on the road.

What can bettors expect from Bradish and the Orioles the rest of the way? Read on as we take a closer look at Kyle Bradish’s stats.

ERA Dipping

Kyle Bradish’s stats show a pitcher who continues to get better with seasoning. After posting a 4.90 ERA as a rookie in 2022, the 26-year-old Bradish has rebounded in Year Two. Through 115.2 innings, Bradish has dropped his ERA to 3.19, ninth-best among qualified starters.

Bradish closed July with a 2.25 ERA in five starts, the lowest of any month this MLB season. And he’s been quite good to start August too, allowing only three runs over his first 11.2 innings.

Bradish has made 12 starts in which he’s given up two or fewer runs, including seven consecutive from June 14-July 21.

Home Sweet Home

Bradish has pitched markedly better at home (2.39 ERA) than on the road (4.09 ERA) this season. He’s allowed just one run over his last 18 innings at Camden Yards and hasn’t given up a home run there since July 1. Batters are hitting a meager .202 against him at home, compared to .252 in his other starts.

Notably, Baltimore has maintained the same record at home (35-21) as on the road (35-21).

Controlling the Zone

Despite walking a season-high five batters Sunday, Bradish has maintained his control fairly well. Bradish has issued 33 walks on the season, 13 fewer than last season in nearly as many innings. He has one or fewer walks in 12 starts, including four of his last seven since July 1.

Bradish’s previous high for walks was four, set April 25 in an 8-6 loss to the Boston Red Sox. That was only his third start of the season and first at home.

Odds Outlook

Baltimore’s resurgence has it among the 2023 MLB leaders. At 70-42, the Orioles hold a 3.0-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays (68-46) atop the AL East and have matched the Atlanta Braves (70-39) for the most wins in baseball. As such, Baltimore has boosted its AL East odds to -165, according to MLB betting lines. The Orioles, who last won the division in 2014, were a +2500 longshot in spring training.

Additionally, Baltimore sports the fourth-best odds to win the AL at +425, behind the Houston Astros (+370), Rays (+380) and Texas Rangers (+390). MLB betting lines also have the Orioles+1100 to win the World Series, up from +6600 in spring training.

Whether they can ultimately win the AL East and make a run in the postseason may depend on their pitching. The Orioles were surprisingly quiet at the Aug. 1 trade deadline, passing on the opportunity to do more to bolster a staff in need of significant reinforcements.

They were rumored to be interested in three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander, who was dealt by the New York Mets back to the Astros in exchange for a pair of highly regarded prospects. Instead, the Orioles made a smaller move, acquiring Jack Flaherty from the St. Louis Cardinals for a trio of prospects, ranked No. 13, 15 and 16 in their system by Baseball America.

Will Flaherty be enough? Time will tell, but he was dominant in his Orioles debut. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed just one run over six innings while striking out eight in a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 3. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday against Houston at home.

Altogether, Baltimore ranks 13th in team ERA (4.08), seventh in strikeouts (1,012) and 10th in quality starts (45).
