Most and Least NFL Season Wins: Birds of Different Feathers

Eagles, Cardinals Expected to Finish on Opposite Ends

Philly Tied With KC as Arizona Bottoms Out

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to be the best team in the NFC for the second straight season. That’s what the sportsbooks’ Most and Least NFL season wins odds indicate. Last year’s Super Bowl runner-up is tied with Kansas City, the winner, at 4-1 each to finish with the most regular seasons this 2023-24. And on the opposite end, the Arizona Cardinals are expected to finish with the fewest wins at 2-1.

Kings of the Hill: The NFL’s Best Regular Season Teams

It’s conventional to have last year’s Super Bowl finalists, Philadelphia and Kansas City, as the two favorites to win the most regular season games. So expect the odds on the Most and Least NFL season wins totals to change quickly depending on what happens for the remainder of the offseason. However, both Philly and KC should stay at the top.

Philadelphia gets a harder schedule in 2023 facing the NFC West and AFC East. The latter may be the toughest division in the NFL this season. On top of that, it rematches Kansas City and plays in an already-difficult division if the NFC East teams stay as competitive as they were in 2022. But Philly returns most of its best players and could be just as good if not better.

Kansas City also has a tough schedule, ranked sixth in terms of strength based on last year’s winning percentages. But the Chiefs almost always have a hard schedule and still find a way to win 12 to 13 games to finish atop the NFL standings. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid still run the show so KC is almost a sure bet.

Next to the two is another tie at 7-1: Buffalo and Cincinnati. These contenders are the consensus best teams next to Kansas City in the AFC. MVP contenders Josh Allen and Joe Burrow remain elite quarterbacks while their teams, respectively, should win 11 to 13 games barring rampant injuries.

Coming in Hot: Other Regular Season Contenders

Other teams of note are the Baltimore Ravens (+1000) and New York Jets (+3500) of the AFC and the Chicago Bears (+10000) of the NFC. These three Baltimore Ravens outfits made significant moves in the offseason and are popular underdog NFC picks.

The Ravens not only locked up star quarterback Lamar Jackson but also bolstered the offense. The Jets also upgraded at QB by acquiring four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, considered the missing piece to a Super Bowl contender.

And the Bears are a longshot given their odds. But if QB Justin Fields takes a big step up, helped by an improved offense, the Bears could more than double its win total from last season. Playing in a winnable NFC North also helps.

Misery Loves Company: The NFL’s Worst Bunch

The Cardinals come into the 2023 NFL season expecting to be the worst team. The team already finished with just four wins in 2022. It will be without franchise QB Kyler Murray for most if not all of 2023. The team also traded away wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, its best offensive player. And Budda Baker, it’s Pro Bowl safety, asked to be traded as well.

Potentially “competing” with Arizona for the worst record per the Most and Least NFL season wins totals is a usual suspect: Houston at +700. The Texans won four games or fewer each season since 2020. They have their fifth head coach in three seasons.

Demeco Ryans is a well-respected defensive guru and has two of the top three picks this year: quarterback C.J. Stroud and linebacker Will Anderson Jr. Houston could be much-improved. The Texans also play in a weak division. Tennessee and Indianapolis are both expected to win no more than seven games each.

Tampa Bay (+800) and Washington (+900) are also predicted to be quite bad this season. The Buccaneers lost quarterback Tom Brady so their 25th-ranked offense is going to be even worse. Washington has plenty of turnovers from its quarterback position to the offensive coordinator. This team could be much better or much worse than its 8-8-1 record in 2022.
