MLB Thursday Results: Mets’ Alonso Maintains Home Run Lead

Tampa is Human! Will They Stay Human?

It was a light day on the diamond, as only 12 of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams were in action. Yet, it was plenty eventful. Let’s recap the MLB Thursday results.

Alonso Powers New York

One day after hitting a walk-off, three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift New York to an 8-7 win, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso showed off his power once more. Alonso mashed his MLB-leading 16th homer, a 446-foot blast to straightaway center off rookie right-hander Taj Bradley, to lead the Mets past the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 at Citi Field.

Alonso went deep in all three games against Tampa Bay, as New York captured its first series victory in a month. The Mets (22-23) also won back-to-back games for the first time since April 20-21.

Priced at +1000 in March to win the home run title, Alonso is one longball ahead of Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Max Muncy. Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia is right behind Muncy with 13, while Aaron Judge, Patrick Wisdom, Luis Robert Jr., and Nolan Gorman each have 12. Judge was priced at +1200 after homering an American League-record 62 times last season.

Underdogs Outperform

The underdogs had a slight edge on Thursday’s MLB schedule, going 5-3 straight up. The Cleveland Guardians overcame the longest odds, defeating the Chicago White Sox 3-1 at +127. Shortstop Gabriel Arias went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Cleveland.

Judge and Anthony Volpe both homered for the Yankees, leading New York past the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 despite +125 odds. The St. Louis Cardinals also won as a +125 underdog, outlasting the Dodgers 16-8. The Cardinals slugged seven homers, including two apiece from catcher Willson Contreras and Gorman. They were the first Cardinals teammates to hit multiple homers in the same game since Matt Carpenter and Tommy Pham on Aug. 26, 2016.

Elsewhere in MLB Thursday results, the Los Angeles Angels (+122) edged the Baltimore Orioles 6-5. Los Angeles rallied with two runs in the eighth inning of the Baltimore bullpen to salvage a split of the four-game series.

The Advantage to the Unders

The Underwent 3-2-1, as teams combined to average 4.8 runs. Of course, that total is bloated by St. Louis’ 16-8 victory over the Dodgers. In actuality, seven of the 12 teams that were in action scored four runs or fewer.

Cleveland’s 3-1 win over AL Central Division rival Chicago was the lowest-scoring game of the day.

Freeman Goes Yard

Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman reached a milestone in MLB Thursday results, becoming the 144th player with at least 300 home runs and 1,000 RBI in his career. Freeman hit a grand slam in the sixth inning off left-hander Genesis Cabrera and finished 2-for-5 with four RBI.

Freeman is just one of seven active players in the 300/1,000 club, joining Miguel Cabrera, Nelson Cruz, Joey Votto, Evan Longoria, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nolan Arenado.
