San Diego Padres vs Miami Marlins Betting Preview

The Disappointing Padres Start Three-Game Series against Second-Place Marlins

Our Padres vs Marlins betting preview starts with a look at the current MLB odds for game one. Ryan Weathers (1-3, 3.94 era) gets the ball for the Friars against Sandy Alcantara (2-5, 4.86 era) for the fish. Miami opened as a strong -130 consensus favorite. There hasn’t been any movement despite the typical amount of Alcantara money coming in early.

The total has been set at 7.5 (over -115). The Marlins are -1.5 (+140), Padres are +1.5 (-140). 83% of the early tickets on the run-line are on the Padres. We continue our Padres vs Marlins betting preview by breaking down both MLB teams followed by our game-one prediction.

Injuries and Losses Piling Up For Padres

No one thought the San Diego Padres would be 24-29 at this point in the season after spending 247 million on their payroll, the third highest in baseball. The Padres trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 7.5 games at the two-month mark, the team they spent all that money on to beat.

The news didn’t get any better for Bob Melvin’s team after Juan Soto was scratched from Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees because of back tightness. There hasn’t been an official response from the team, but it’s likely that he’ll be available against Miami considering he was still on the bench yesterday in case Melvin needed a pinch hitter. With Soto’s injury, San Diego has 10 players either out or banged up.

The Friars have dropped four of their last five games in Miami and 12 of their last 17 overall. For a line-up that was supposed to be among the best in baseball, San Diego is hitting just ..221 on the, ranked 29th in Major League Baseball, a direct reflection of why they’re 25th in runs scored per game with 4.04. Imagine where the Padres would be if it wasn’t for their pitching who has 22 quality starts (ranked 9th).

Marlins Sweep Angels, Start 9-Game Homestand

The National League East was supposed to be about the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves, with the Philadelphia Phillies a pesky annoyance. The Florida Marlins have crashed the party after overtaking the New York Mets for second in the division after a 5-5 road trip while the Mets went 2-4 on their trip after winning five straight.

Manager Skip Shumaker has his team in a position to move closer to the Braves with the slumping Padres, Oakland Athletics, and Kansas City Royals on tap. Only six other teams have produced more of a profit for bettors (+273 units).

The Marlins’ 2-0 win Sunday, was the first time the Angels had been shutout in 94 games. Alcantara is just 1-5 but looks to continue his surge toward regaining the form that allowed him to start last season’s All-Star game. Against Colorado, the Dominican righty allowed just four hits over six innings, while Miami put up 10 runs in support.

Over Alcantara’s last three starts, the 7-year veteran has allowed just 16 hits in 19.1 innings despite a horrible outing against the Cincinnati Reds. Weathers has been in and out of the bullpen for San Diego although he’ll be making his third straight start, giving up eight earned runs in his last 11.2 innings. We conclude our Padres vs Marlins betting preview with our official game one selection.

Total Looks to Be Compelling Wager

When you check MLB scores, we think it’s likely that this outcome won’t jump out at you because we’re betting that this will be a low-scoring affair. The Padres have been an under machine with 35 winners in their first 52 games (1 push).

That number continues when breaking it down to current form with seven of their last 10 also cashing under tickets. The numbers aren’t as dominant as the Padres, but Miami has also shaded to the under with 28 of their 51 and six of 10 decisions cashing under tickets.

That’s good enough for us, bet this game to under the total of 8.5 That does it for our Padres vs Marlins betting preview, we wish you the best as we wind down the second month of the MLB season.
